Do men still do that getup in madras and around? That man looks like an uncle, but upon further calculations he must be 40ish to have a son that old. So, men of my generation dress like that in madras and around?

i wear a veshti and a white kurtha (known as a jibba in TN) most days when i am in my parents' house in madras. it is not a get up, it's everyday home wear.

it is outside wear too. it is the lungi that is not worn by middle class and upper middle class men outside the house. it is perfectly acceptable to wear a shirt and a veshti or a kurtha and a veshti outside. in fact it is the preferred outer wear to go to temples, concerts, weddings, and to the neighborhood vegetable vendor.

>>Oh. Reminds me of a multicultural thing in my kids' elementary school when the younger guy was in KG. I went there staright from work . Both had worn indian outfits and my younger son thought I didn't regognize him. He came up to me and whispered slowly 'dad, its me. I am just wearing an indian suit'

lol max. are you calling the clothes veshtis or the people veshtis?
anyway, like rekz said, it's common in rural parts, even among people of my generation.

>>>Surprisingly I could recognize just one thing: I think it is the Ramakrishna Mission. I love the way the driver asks personal questions about 'sisters, brothers' so innocently. I often get tourist taxis to run around town and it usually lasts hours each day due to having to deal with assorted bureaucrats in different parts of the city. I usually ask the driver to have lunch with me and they are pretty open with their life stories, their views on politics etc and also ask me about my life. One kid Varun whom I get quite often once thanked me for having him accompany me to the theososphical society compound. He told me he was going to make it a point to stop by there often for the greenery.

that may be a big difference. it is as much everyday wear amongst the mylapore/triplicane carnatic music cognoscenti as it is in the villages.

[quote="Vidya Bagchi"]wait Mylapore is in Chennai? That first video was of CHENNAI?
>>>There was Mylapore before there was Chennai or even a Madras. The portuguese described the "idolaters" and their happy, big and rich "Meliapor" thusly in the late 1500's:
Aqui a cidade foi que se chamava
Meliapor, fermosa, grande e rica;
Os dolos antigos adorava
Como inda agora faz a gente inica.
Longe do mar naquele tempo estava,
Quando a F, que no mundo se pubrica,
Tom vinha prgando, e j passara
