travelling for a week in July. Wanted to buy something new for luggage. since am going alone, wanted to make do with just one carry on. Soft duffle-bag type preferrable. But I might carry perfumes, etc, so might check it in atleast in the first lap, so should be able to double as that.

Go for wheeled luggage. You'll appreciate the convenience when you have to walk huge distances across terminals.

If you are checking it in while flying into India, don't pack any valuables and do lock it. Also, carry a backpack with essentials and a change of clothes, just in case your bag gets delayed.

>>> We bought a complete set a long time ago, one of the brand name deals, but honestly if this is not for repeated use, anything at your local Target will do. They are usually good for a couple of trips, but as MD says below, go for the wheeled variety. When I travel alone, I have often gone just with the carry-on, but the unwheeled variety is torture when you have to switch planes somewhere.

A duffle bag that is good enough for checking in if I have to.

Looked those up. Could not decide on size. And there were negative reviews about some
Parts. Will look more. Thanks!

We have done that and ended up collecting a lot of broken ones. The good ones lasted a good 15 years and almost all are still intact. But I am getting a suitcase itch.

I saw an exact similar model of the same manufacturer (same price range) at target. But just at a next door Ross the same was for 50% off. I bought 2 for my upcoming travel. Looks sturdy and reliable. Have to see how long it lasts.

oh, pardon me, it's called the "hipzbag" and it's so cool: hands-free, and has a half-a-dozen other advantages which you can figure out for yourself.

You can get smaller size 18-20 or <30 inch bags too in the same brand. They were good too, but I was looking for luggage for checking in.

So, do they sell time-shares in luggage as they do in condos and planes?

*I am thinking of starting every senetence with a "So" like "Om"
