Have you heard of this guy?

He is one of the few decent guys the DMK party had in leadership position.

He is also an intellectual.

And he switched to Janata Party when MGR split from the DMK.

Yes. I used to get mixed up with R Chezhian and Nedunchezhian (co-founder of DMK who was outmaneuvered by MK)

..a bit more about him...

He joined Kamaraj Cong(O) which then merged with Janata party. After Kamaraj, Cong(O) rapidly declined and by the time it merged with JP in 1977, it just was a spent force (much like BJP in TN today). He was a Rajya Sabha member, etc..for a while - I think.

MK made sure no one was left in DMK who was Charismatic. Only Saddik Pasha (being a muslim) and Anbazhagan were left. PU Shanmugam, Madhiazhagan and nedunchezhian were more prominent than MK but MK was a born hooligan and learnt the art of cheating in the cine world.

Era Chezhian was never as successful and never had access to the riiches - dont know how he would have turned out if he had his chances.

Karunanidhi succeeded Annadurai as CM fairly in a fair election. Nedunchezhian had no following in the party. His only argument was, "I am senior" so I should be CM. He stayed with DMK as No 2 after the defeat. Then moved tro ADMK as MGR;s No 2. Then he wanted to be CM Mat MGR;s death because he was senior. But MGR's wife first and Jayalalitha next became CM. Nedunchezian stayed as No 2 of JL.

In sumnmary Karuna became CM in a fair election
