----- No need to be uneasy. It just shows how far removed we are from actual production of our food. Not an exact comparison - but the German Field Marshall von Molte (under Kaiser) used to be pissed off about modern warfare - people shooting at each other from 100 yards out, instead of actually cutting the enemy with your sword and feeling the warmth of his blood on your skin!

I cook chicken for my kids and H and once I ate the mexican prawn starter while I was preg. The picture from the mex restaurant was so tempting and was haunting me for days. I tried it but couldn't eat more than 2 - too much for a temptation.

It is a remarkable thing..for animals to be part of cycles of nature- have to sacrifice themselves to provide eating pleasure to other living creatures..even after their death. Can't say the same for humans after death, we are no use to anyone..unless we donate our organs. (Well some cadavers are still used to teach Anatomy..and Forensic Sciences..and there are few other exceptions, of course).
Saw a funny post which read "Women don't be virgins when you go to heaven..terrorists may be eagerly waiting for you"
There are so many kinds of mokshas..which we read-are taught about, but, who knows? Would be nice to go a heaven with "real" animals, if such a place exists!

Go to "Style" section last page (Kidspost). It discusses bugs in our food. It seems some coloring bugs are added to get that nice red color to the strawberry yogurt.

Yes for all except 7 & 9, and BTW, the same holds true for, not so saaphisticated, villagers of India; not sure of the intention of the Survey but there is nothing unusual about those Qs.

I wondered about the survey too, since..from what I know, there are not too many non-vegetarians, esp the "hunter and cleaner types" in this forum. And am impressed CD:)
There is a small gender difference in India..at least in most of the families I know..men were primarily the hunters, fishermen-killers. fleecers, cleaners etc. Nowadays- don't think even people in the middle class- villages have these skills. Don't mean to be graphic..but some women have the knack and with experience- do it with precision and quickly like a surgical incision.

Maria, As I said there is nothing unusual about these activities at least 25-30 years ago. Yes I've witnessed headless chicken move around. It's not like they do it on a daily basis but enough to call it a norm. Like you mentioned gender difference is minute when it comes to this; women don't usually pluck a chicken but they do cut into small pieces and clean gizzard etc.,

Re: Survey
I was curious about how far everyone is removed from the production and preparation of our food. I am thinking of a similar survey for vegetarians too. I was once asked by someone (who did not even grow up in a big city like a Bombay or a Calcutta) if it's a fact that rice came from paddy.confuzzled dude wrote:

Selective non-vegetarian.
3. Did you ever kill the animimal/bird you ate?
I haven't done any of these, but my grandfather did. Chicken, for sure.
4. What weapon did you use to kill your food - knife/ sword/ spear/ gun/ wood/ your hands?
5. Did you skin and clean the innards after you killed your food?
My grandmother did, and we used to watch it.
6. Did you ever retrieve an egg from under a hen?
Yes, my grandfather had a chicken farm, and we were sometimes allowed to collect eggs. Which reminds me, every time he came to visit us in the city, he came with one hundred eggs, and big steel can of chicken fry.
7. Did you ever eat a non-conventional animal? If yes, what animal did you eat?
8. Did you ever catch a fish? Did you scale and clean it?
Yes, we had a fish farm too. My grandmother used to clean the fish by rubbing it against a big rock, and then throw a balloon like thing from it at the kids, so the kids would step on it and pop it. I just googled to figure out what that could have been, and looks like it might been a bladder. Eww.
9 Did you ever fleece a sheep or any other animal (a cat, for example)?
10. List any animal/bird not on this list that you ate -- goat, chicken, lamp/sheep, pig/boar, cow.
My grandfather's BIL from another village used to shoot flying birds, not sure what kind, and would send it over with a servant. My GF liked "pitta mamsam" but he didn't like shooting or killing those. He also used to get the special treatment when fish was cooked - the head part of the fish was reserved for him.

i tried eating a fish-head but failed. the rest of the family relishes it. i've eaten whole crabs (fried) -- small soft shell ones.
i could never bring myself to eating paaya.
i like the phrase "selective non-vegetarian." i think that is how i should describe myself for who knows i might dig into a kebab sometime.

Re: Survey
The place I used to work several years ago had a French restaurant downstairs whose menu used to sport exotic fauna - alligators, rattlesnakes, wilderbeast, etc. I never ate any of that stuff but people who did eat a rattlesnake dish said it tasted like chicken.
On the vegetarian side, I've heard a story that the Maharajah of Vizianagaram once lost his way when he was out hunting and happened across an old lady. He was hungry and asked her if she had something to eat. She invited him to her little hut, and gave him a fruit she had (as naivedyam) from a puja she performed earlier and asked him stay over for dinner. The Maharajah obliged, but the lady did not have any vegetables in the house. So she went out and cut some heal tender grass and made a palak-like dish for the king. He had no idea what it was, but it tasted so good and finally asked her what it was. She told him it was just tender grass. Immediately he gifted her an agraharam (village) called "Garikapaadu" (literal translation - a place of grass).

I wonder why they consider deer (venison) as a delicacy in India. People here complain that it's flavor is so gamey you need to get used to it. But then they say the same about Argentinian beef. That is because the cattle there grow up eating alfalfa grass whereas here they feed the cattle here with all sorts researched feed and pump all sorts of hormones into them.

Try an organic steak/burger next time. See if you can tell the difference in taste.

Your sample is too big to classify as scientific, can't have more than 2 participants to call it a valid survey.
