The great American hope from Mass bows out leaving 3 t-shirt clad desi teens to their nerdy universe of alphabets and no discernible palpitations.

There are people who comment that learning the spellings of difficult words is an act of rote memorization and it is not good for critical thinking etc.
IMO they are jealous.

as the tournament gets deeper, participants spell using intuition, meaning, origin, etc....rather than regurgitating the words. At that level it is one of application and analysis. Not to mention, the competition, tension, mental make up all play a role.

True! Just rote doesn't help at the level on Stage.

Does ESPN cover chess champioships? Probably not. Chess players do not wear their emotions on their sleeves, there are no cheerleaders, no room for commercials, no emotional audience (mostly mum, if not they talk in whispers). They do offer one facility better than other popular games on TV like football, basketball etc. They provide ample room for commentators and pundits to shoot off their mouths, before, during and after the game.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:why does espn cover this?

It's amazing how those of us born in the US had to pay our dues (i.e, the military draft), and how foreigners, especially those from India, can just waltz in here - many with US governmental aid and grants - and enjoy the spoils. They flock into the US under the guise of H-1B visas, knocking American workers out of work and impeding them from finding other gainful employment. They force their kids to attain and achieve, robbing them of a normal childhood............all under the guise of success. Not surprising their kids have a dominance in this contest. Not surprising at all.
