I saw Purple Rain when it first came out and thought this guy was talented. Somehow he got lost trying to find his own identity, initially dressing up in gaudy women's clothing to appeal to the San Fransisco crowd, then trying to compete with Michael Jackson in dancing and choreography and later focusing on just his music. I think he won a prestigious award of some kind because of his music much later.

>>>> Purple Rain, that's the one I was thinking of. In Prince's case, I don't think the guy was trying to change for marketing purposes. I think he really was weird. Some of the lyrics in his works are sheer genius though. I will try to post the songs when I remember them. My interest in pop music started to wane after some time and I lost track of this guy before 'the artist formerly known Prince' phase.
