[poll] do you know how to type?
the keyboard has become an integral part of our lives. yet it puzzles me that they do not teach you typing: neither in school nor in college. i wonder if learning typing has become redundant.

Most kids in us schools have opporttunity to learn typing. Yes. It is redundant as kids are superfast with their smartphones.[justify]

oh wow! no wonder all my friends in college (in the US) knew how to type their essays. bewildering why india does not have this option in schools.truthbetold wrote:Most kids in us schools have opporttunity to learn typing.

no, i did not learn typing but can type using both hands, using my style, pretty fast and without looking at the keyboard... and YET manage to make numerous typos.
EDIT: actually, I did not formally learn to type, but my mom's office always had a typewriter, and I would play on it for fun. And her assistant (whose story I wrote once), taught me the early basics of it, like how to place the fingers where. I didn't seriously learn it then, but later used that information from memory.

my dad made me learn typing. at one point he was concerned that the way things were aligned against us kids as forward caste kids, we wouldn't make it to professional colleges and would only be able to pursue clerical careers. in his mind getting formal typing lessons was his way of preparing us for it.

Your father who was a doctor did that?
I am beginning to believe in fate. One may start out to be a brilliant student. But if he or she ends up with friends who goof off then they are bound to be influenced and may end up messing up their lives.

If he was afraid for your future, he could have trained you as a medical technician. They make more money than typists.

## if I remember correctly, max had mentioned his dad was an anesthesiologist. why didn't he teach max to do cpr and chest compressions and use an ambu bag? max could've stayed back in india and worked with several hospitals to devise a network of ambulance routes and methods of triage for all these people suffering in india from manmade and natural calamities. he missed an opportunity to give back to his country in a meaningful way.Rishi wrote:MaxEntropy_Man wrote:Rishi wrote:Your father who was a doctor did that?MaxEntropy_Man wrote:my dad made me learn typing. at one point he was concerned that the way things were aligned against us kids as forward caste kids, we wouldn't make it to professional colleges and would only be able to pursue clerical careers. in his mind getting formal typing lessons was his way of preparing us for it.

nanda -- i had no interest in doing anything connected to healthcare or medicine. the pathetic way i was taught biology in high school killed any interest i may have had in the subject. and i had no grand notions of patriotism either.

Re: [poll] do you know how to type?
I sent my wifey for typing class in US...i read he first week class note abt key mapping.
now i type faster than her and use some 6 or 7 fingers. i still look at kbd, which are all antiques and act on their own (there is THE reason for my errors and mishteeks).

I learned to type formally in highschool. But the speedy way my niece texts using two thumbs leaves me gasping for air!

ask her to be careful or she won't be texting for long.

The moment I get into arguing with my teen over texts, my head starts spinning. So eventually I have to tell her to stop bothering me.

Thanks. Just emailed her the link. She predictably might give me two thumbs down for it!

>>>>Never learned to type formally. I type with two fingers and over the years have become pretty good at it. I normally type the text out really fast and go back and make the corrections. Come to think of it, this is a metaphor for my life . At work, when I had an Admin Assistant who handled all the communications, I would dictate out into a tape and she would took care of it. This also had the added benefit of being able to do this while I was driving. Fast forward a few years, surfing the net and posting messages in a rather prolific manner had the side benefit of improving my typing. I like the voice -activated typing apps, but haven't used this much yet since I don't mind typing all that much anymore.
