The Monsoons are here...
My favoritest time of the year. It rained non-stop through out the weekend and is raining on and off today.
Predictably, this third world dump of a city (aka Shanghai-wannabe), is waterlogged and traffic-snarled.

I am told that there has been a large migration from Mumbai to Pune in the last decade. Wonder if Pune is any better.

But there is something magical about the monsoons, all said, I think they are very romantic! There is no counterpart of the monsoons in the west as in the US and UK it rains in winter! yuck

I timed the click when the wipers were down. It was pouring real hard, and it felt more on the turnpike. Very bad visibility. XH, as usual, doesn't bother much about changing the wiper settings to make them faster and all, so he kept my default settings on.

pune does not see as much rain as mumbai and since there is no high tide to push the water back, pune does not get clogged like slumbai. pune has its own set of problems with the infrastructure, though. it was a small city which is now trying to be a metro but failing badly.
a lot of investors from slumbai have bought property in pune but they haven't necessarily moved. 3,500 per sq ft in pune sounds irresistible to them when the lowest they have heard in their life is 7,000 per sq ft in virar.

Bwahaha..pleej to note, there was no high tide in slumbai yday. The waterlogging that left people stuck in traffic jams for hours together was entirely due to ongoing, haphazard civic construction work and poorly maintained drains, clogged with garbage thrown by mumbaikars. EwwWerrRy year, the civic body bids out contracts to desilt the drains but none to dispose of the silt. So the contractors leave behind piles of silt on the banks, from where it gets washed back into the drain with the next rains. Rinse and repeat.

Ah..they are here..I mean there:)
Did the raindrops touch you and melt?
Did the thunder rattle you a little?
Did the lightning flashes..make it seem festive?
Did you cuss at the water logged streets and snail like traffic..as they interupt your busy day and schedules..
Did you want to be at some other place..warm all by yourself or.. snuggle up with someone special?
Well, I miss Ms. Monsoon and her awesome power as she makes her annual appearance (prefer her to Ms. Snow, Mr. Tornado showing off) Can imagine little kids somewhere are playing..while their roofs leak and and their little homes are being drenched..as their parents do the best they can which may add to the misery..and wait for her..Ms. M to disappear..
And she will..
So many :star:rhetorical questions and thoughts on a humid summer day..trying to express them with some self-learned typing skills (far from great!)..monsoons do bring back memories, can't help it!

Bangalore used to have excellent drainage until the last decade or two when paper bags have contributed to clogging. Even though they are supposed to be outlawed, they continue to be used and discarded. The roads get badly clogged each time after a heavy downpour. Not sure about Mumbai streets.

Re: The Monsoons are here...
I know it rains a lot in Bombay and Calcutta, and Delhi, a little. How about Madras? Average rainfall there?
I visited my hometown (in Orissa) in India in 2001, and my brother was telling me that it had rained everyday for 73 days till that day. The mountain people there there have a term for "sufficient rain." It's called "zor phutsi," meaning "sky water meeting ground water."

Sure..it does rain a lot in Chennai..of course, there are some years of drought too in between..
There is a book by Samina Ali "Madras on Rainy Days"..was a nice read, quite descriptive of Chennai when it rains.. with her memories of life in Madras.
I still prefer Madras, but have to get used to Chennai.

talking about rains in chennai, used to love playing cards in the light of a lowly hurrican lamps:-) kids thought elders cheated and elders thought kids cheated. It's one time where everyone got together and had such a great time. those were the times M akka. People now are way too stuck up and "busy" with their own lives.

Very true I ma..everyone is "busy"..but, as I always say..the "really busy" people (anywhere) seldom say they are busy..and we all, with no exceptions "make time" for people and things we want to..It's funny the busiest people always return calls and e-respond immediately or ASAP..and try to be punctual too.
May be it's a combo of a new era- tech explosion, westernization, middle class booming with money and materialism..changing people's attitudes rather dramatically and the simple pleasures-joy slowly disappearing there too (am generalizing)

Those lowly hurricane lamps were the only lamps we had in the house until my 7th or 8th class. That's when electric supply came to our neck of the woods (literally:-).Impedimenta wrote:

Is that a hint to Merlot that he should romanticize the rain in Mumbai, write a book and make lots of money rather than sulk like Advani?

Re: The Monsoons are here...
Just like the in the US, there are expensive schooldistricst (or neighborhoods), which pay higher taxes are posh localities with clean roads, Mumbai should do something similar. I wonder how do celebrities living in Bandra, Juhu and Lokhandwala cope with this wading through washed out human and dog poop in the monsoons.
