Congress urges Badal to raise memorial for innocents killed across the state
JALANDHAR: In the days of politics around memorials - first Blue Star memorial in Darbar Sahib and another in Gurudwara Rakab Ganj in Delhi - both supported by Shiromani Akali Dal, now Punjab Congress has raised demand for building a befitting memorial for 25,000 innocent people killed in Punjab.
"Now that the SGPC has constructed a memorial in memory of those killed in Operation Blue Star within the precincts of Darbar Sahib and the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has laid the foundation stone for a memorial for the victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots at Delhi, it would be befitting, justified and honorable for the SAD-BJP to construct a memorial for those 25,000 innocent civilians, policemen and leaders of different political parties, who laid down their lives for the nation," said Punjab Congress spokesperson Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Saturday.
"This memorial can be on the pattern of 'The National September 11 Memorial and Museum' built in New York (USA) to commemorate the September 11, 2001 attack," he said.
"Although both the memorials being undertaken by SGPC and DSGMC relate to the historical perspective of the Sikh community alone, to which our party has no objection but what about the sacrifices made by the approximately 25,000 innocent people killed during the terrorism era, that included Sikhs, Hindus, Muslims, Christians and of other communities?" Khaira asked.

I thought India and later Beant Singh/Rajiv did most of the innocent killings - mowing them down carte blanche..

There was extreme danger to Hindus in Punjab (especially in villages) during early 1980s. According to the news media (both newspapers and TV), many Hindu families living in the villages were attacked during nights and killed, and numerous cases reported about buses getting stopped in the rural areas, Hindu men taken off them and slaughtered.

I remember all those things... But Congress recommending a "memorial for the Innocents" is a little funny.
