Really? For one eye? Almost $4000! It pretty much costs the same in the United States. I wonder how many in India can really afford to pay Rs. 250,000.

Yes, it's old info Thamizh thozhar.
For one eye..even in the best private hospitals in Chennai..it's less than Rs. 40,000 to 50,000 ( apparently includes all pre and post-op charges). And they have all the lastest tech/procedures available.

I don't know about TN, but in Kakinada (AP) you can get it done for free. Dr. Sankurathri, an eye doctor, started this service in memory of his wife and children who were killed in that Air-India crash (Kanishka) over Irish Sea. Sankurathri Foundation has a U.S. arm called Krutidhata located in Houston, TX.
A few years ago our old handle Truthseeker sent them $500 as a donation. If you need more info on Sankurathri or Krutidhata just google with those names.

Re: Cataract surgery in TN
If it is strictly laser surgery Nethralaya in Chennai charges around Rs 45,000 for both eyes if paid in cash. Not sure about the cost through insurance as it takes more than 3 months to get paid, if covered. My aunt had it done back in 2010.Rishi wrote:Any idea how much it will cost in Rupees?

I don't think he is wrong. It depends on the problem with the eyes and the length of hospital stay. The rates vary depending on the complexity of the surgery. If it is a simple laser surgery not requiring hospitalization, it is far cheaper.southindian wrote:Max, we petition that you please take a zero out from the above number. GC,
Did she get done for both eyes at the same time or one eye after the other after a month of healing?

Re: Cataract surgery in TN
She had it done one eye at a time with a 3 month interval I believe. Hers was a simple, straight forward laser surgery.Rishi wrote:goodcitizn wrote:If it is strictly laser surgery Nethralaya in Chennai charges around Rs 45,000 for both eyes if paid in cash. I think desi lens vs imported lens makes a diff too. I am bad at rememebering costs. But overheard one of the old helps discussing the same with mom, and wanted to go for desi option. Dunno the diff between the two.

Is there a difference in quality between desi lens and the imported ones?

In India you get to choose between Indian brands and imported brands. Obviously, the latter cost more.Rishi wrote:Vidya Bagchi wrote:I think desi lens vs imported lens makes a diff too. Now it gets complicated.
What exactly I should say in my e-mail? That I need a cataract surgery and I live in Mambalam?
They are going to ask for details.

Re: Cataract surgery in TN
You don't have to say where you are. Just ask for details saying that you're shopping for a good hospital for having cataract surgery done and that you'd appreciate a response with details and price structure. And ask for a phone contact with an appropriate doctor. They do close to 100 cataract surgeries a day so it's worth your while to get some basic info on which to decide on further steps.Rishi wrote:goodcitizn wrote:You're welcome.
