Zipping down the turnpike and highway, past the white-on-brown "NSA Employees Only" exit and the National Cryptologic Museum and bursting onto alphabetized streets, the town reeked of pretty 20-somethings indulging in retail therapy at European storefronts. Tourists jostled with the severely upwardly-mobile-restricted local denizens whose only opportunities seemed to be 30-year careers as porters, doormen and taxi drivers. The Catholic university on the Potomac rolled out cia analysts that trotted out life-behind-the-scenes vignettes for eager high schoolers. Lunch at the indian restaurant came complete with pictures of his highness of jaipur preening with his american friends after a shikaar and a dead tiger at their foot. Trip back was a series of rest stops with assorted human zoo specimens, cloud burst turning the highway into a parking lot, little children unable to hold it in, peeing on the roadside. Another summer milestone, checked off.
