Tuesday Trivia: July 30, 2013
There is a lot of talk about the division of Andhra Pradesh into two (or three) new states. So I decided to make this week's trivia all about India's old political lines and the changes that have occurred over the decades. These questions are probably easier than th regular trivia. Same rule as ever: no googling!
1. PEPSU was a state in the Indian Union between independence and states reorganization in 1956. In 1956, territories of PEPSU were merged into three other states. Name those three states.
2. Central Provinces and Berar was a province of the Indian Union. It became the state of Madhya Pradesh when the constitution was adopted in 1950. What was the capital of this province/state?
3. Delhi became the capital of British India in 1911. Prior to that, it was part of another province of British India. That province has since been divided into multiple states. Which province?
4. Curzon’s division of Bengal into two provinces in 1905 sparked the Vande Mataram movement. That division also affected another province of India, which is now a state in India. Which province?
5. Before Partition in 1947, how many provinces did India have? (a) 9 (b) 13 (c) 17 (d) 21
6. Among the three provinces of British India that joined Pakistan in toto, one was created as late as 1936. Prior to that year, that territory was part of a province that still remains part of India. What is the province, and which province was it carved out of in 1936?
7. This state in India was originally created under that name in 1948 combining over 20 petty princely states. In 1956, the state became a Union Territory, and in 1966 it gained significant territory from the division of the state mentioned above in question 3. It again became a state in 1970. Name this state that started off a state, became a union territory, then got bigger and became a state again.
8. NEFA was a Union Territory of the Indian Union, created in 1954. It has since been reorganized into a state. Name the state.
9. The state of Kerala was organized in 1956 by merging one district of Madras state with the Tranvancore-Cochin state. The name of the district is supposed to have originated from the local term for “hill country.” Name the district.
10. The state of Karnataka was formed by bringing together parts of five different states that were then in existence. Name them.

Not quite... the present district of Palghat was part of a larger district of the Madras state; that larger district became part of Kerala, where it has now been divided into five districts including Palakkad.Kris wrote:9. Palghat?
Mysore is correct. TN and MH didn't come into existence until later. But Madras and Bombay states did give up territory to make Karnataka happen. That's three of five. Kerala and AP were created at the same time as Karnataka, so they didn't give up land for Karnataka. One of the constituent parts of Andhra Pradesh did give up territory that went to Karnataka.Kris wrote:10. AP, TN, Maharashtra, Kerala, Mysore

I need to restate question 1 because it was incorrect. Here goes:
1. PEPSU was a state in the Indian Union between independence and states reorganization in 1956. Today, the territories of that old state are distributed between three states. Name those three states.

No, it is Punjab. PEPSU was Patiala and East Punjab States Union.indophile wrote:1. Rajasthan
Good guess, but no.indophile wrote:2. Jabalpur
No, the answer is Punjab. Bengal presidency did not include the provinces of Agra, Awadh (later the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh), Punjab, etc. although the Governor General (and later Viceroy) sat in Calcutta and supervised the governors of those provinces. Bengal presidency directly included Bihar, Orissa, Assam and the northeast, and Burma at various points.indophile wrote:3. Bengal
Correct. East Bengal was merged with Assam in 1905. When the division of Bengal was undone in 1912, Assam became a separate province again.indophile wrote:4. Assam
No, the correct answer is 17.indophile wrote:5. 13

Here is an update... one question remains.
2. Central Provinces and Berar was a province of the Indian Union. It became the state of Madhya Pradesh when the constitution was adopted in 1950. What was the capital of this province/state?
Hint: It was not Jabalpur. It was not Bhopal; Bhopal was a separate state at the time. In 1956, Bhopal state was merged with parts of the old Central Provinces and Berar state, Madhya Bharat state, and Vindhya Pradesh state to create the new Madhya Pradesh with Bhopal as capital. The old capital of Madhya Pradesh (between 1950 and 1956) went to another state in 1956.

Correct. All questions are answered now. Berar was another name for Vidarbha, the eastern region of current Maharashtra state. The people speak a different dialect of Marathi, and their culture and history are somewhat different from those of the rest of Maharashtra.goodcitizn wrote:Was it Nagpur?Idéfix wrote:Here is an update... one question remains.

Berar, Bidar, Bijapur, Golkonda, and Ahmednagar were spun off as the five independent kingdoms out of the old Bahmani empire.
