I used to love this song. I eventually grew out of it. This movie was released just a few months after I had visited Ooty and reminded me of the beautiful scenery. If someone could work some magic and make Sharukh Khan disappear from the scene or replace his face with someone else's then the song would be even better.

for me, SRK's energy is a BIG part of the song. I don't think if it would be the same for me w/o him in it.

i am by no means indiscriminate in my appreciation of Indian film music, but i like the tamil version of this song, for reasons I won't bother explaining here.

what does "beshtest" mean? are you trying to be as witty as the two tamilians here - one a woman and the other, probably a man - who say that and expect everyone to burst into laughter? would "worstest" be equally witty?

For me it is a naarthie self deprecating kinda joke through which we acknowledge that English is not our first language so we speak it wrong.
Who you calling Tamil women? I Thot Nevada is a guy and max is 100% a guy.

the two people who use "beshtest" are uppusaamy gowNDer and bw. i don't know why it's a humorous or interesting thing to say. it must be in the same class as boobsy kapasi's
"actually, this reminds me of an old jock. i'll post the jock in the jokes-thread tomorrow." and
"hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!"
it must be the water.

i did not learn indian classical music (ICM) formally, so my appreciation was developed by listening and deliberately training my ear, a continuing exercise i have engaged in nearly all my adult life. i cannot for example identify individual notes, but identify ragas by pattern recognition. early in my quest to learn more about ICM, i developed the habit of remembering ragas, by remembering the cinema songs set in specific ragas. jaane kahan is an early example of this sort of exercise; it is set in raga shivaranjani.

Next time when I listen to it will certainly observe the shivaranjani. Do you know any songs with "Sangarabaranam" raga? It is my fav raga.

here are a couple more hindi movie songs in shivaranjani:
i think my favorite shivranjani based hindi movie song is mere naina. the mangeshkar woman's voice spoils the second song for me.

sankarabharanam is the basic western scale. you are likely to find plenty of examples. the problem is unless it is classically based it is difficult to identify it as pure shankarabharanam. i'll try to find a couple of good examples.

i listen to all kinds of music. indian cinema music (tamil and hindi) is firmly rooted in ICM. i use them as tools in my quest to a deeper understanding of ICM.

stripped of the gamakams (the little vibratos the decorate carnatic music), this doesn't much sound like shankarabharanam, but it is definitely based on that scale.

no idea. she asked me for representative examples of songs set in certain ragas. i don't have any great interest in any of these movies themselves outside of the music.
music in india cinema is very interesting. however, i share my dislike of nearly all indian cinema with bw.

i meant that they looked like tamil songs, which i don't understand. i like all cinema. any genre, any language, bring it on, except the ones that have violence w/no reason.

can't stand the sight of SRK - as for the tamil version, i can't imagine anything more incongruous.

Haha..c'mon, surely, for the refined connoisseurs of the arts that y'all are, Carnatic music trumps all things gastronomic. And Maharajapuram Santhanam trumps all other singers. Algebraically, shouldn't that one youtube video* trump over all my past transgressions? Wipe the slate clean and leave me with some credits?? Why are you still holding these petty grudges??
*If I could find a video of Maharajapuram Santhanam singing the Shivaranjani AND doing BN, I would have posted it, but much as I looked, I couldn't find it.

I liked pretty much all the songs in this movie. Dil se re and jiya jale being others. But I like watching this song every once in a while. Like the whole composition of it, including choreography.

not really. he is known for certain things, impeccable tamil diction and adherence to shruthi, but he never had much creativity. for that you have to listen to someone else who also learned from his father maharajapuram vishwanatha iyer (MVI), i.e. semmangudi srinivasa iyer (SSI). SSI is considered the true artistic descendant of MVI. of his own generation, any number of other artistes were also more creative than him -- nedunuri krishnamurthy, t.n.seshagopalan etc.
santhanam certainly made pretty music and recorded a lot of music.
