I don't feel "patriotic" or anything on August 15th. I never did. When I got my US visa my grandfather remarked that he fought for the independence of the country and I was leaving it for greener pastures. One of those "sad, but what to do" moments in life that we get used to.

My younger brother's birthday is tomorrow. Ironically, he got married on India's Republic Day. I guess he lost his Independence on Republic Day.

Nine years ago, I left India on August 15. I hadn't planned for the symbolism; tickets were cheaper because of the holiday, and that was the most important consideration in my newfound status as a poor student. I am reminded every independence day of that trip and my move here.

I am also reminded of Iqbal's forgotten words from the famous sArE jahAn sE achchA:

gurbat me ho agar ham, rahtA hai dil vatan me,
samjho vahIn hamEn bhI dil ho jahAn hamArA

I may be abroad, but my heart is at home;
Consider me to be where my heart is.

I like to watch this speech on this day every year. This covers just the first minute or so; I wish a fuller version of the audio were available online.

And I like to read Nehru's brilliant words. It is hard to find a better articulation of India's historical journey -- and its challenges then and now -- in fewer words.

At the dawn of history India started on her unending quest, and trackless centuries are filled with her striving and the grandeur of her success and her failures. Through good and ill fortune alike she has never lost sight of that quest or forgotten the ideals which gave her strength. We end today a period of ill fortune and India discovers herself again.

...
The appointed day has come - the day appointed by destiny - and India stands forth again, after long slumber and struggle, awake, vital, free and independent. The past clings on to us still in some measure and we have to do much before we redeem the pledges we have so often taken. Yet the turning point is past, and history begins anew for us, the history which we shall live and act and others will write about.

...
And to India, our much-loved motherland, the ancient, the eternal and the ever-new, we pay our reverent homage and we bind ourselves afresh to her service. Jai Hind!

In the same speech, Nehru transcended nationalism and made a prediction that is more true today than it was when he said the words: "Peace has been said to be indivisible; so is freedom, so is prosperity now, and so also is disaster in this one world that can no longer be split into isolated fragments."

Feb 29th would be an ideal wedding day.

Son woke me up. So, could not sleep and logged on. I will be attending a small elementary school's Independence day celebrations in few hours time. It will be interesting to watch the celebrations with my family as my daughter is excited to listen/know the meaning of Indian National Anthem.

This may also interest her... full version of Tagore's song. The meaning isn't hard to figure out as it is highly Sanskritized Bangla.

Interesting. Wonder if there's a similar one in Tamil.

Indians in this club are getting fewer each year.

Happy India's Independence Day to the ones still on India's side before US Citizenship.

i have never done anything remotely patriotic on the i day. when i was a kid, i always slept until 9 AM on this day and never attended flag hoisting even if it meant paying a fine of rs 20. sorry, sleep > flag hoisting. even today, you will find me legging it at a top speed of 9.4 kmph when someone mentions anything related to watan, mulk and patriotism. my next handle is captain scum.

edit - i think NRIs appear more patriotic than the resident indians. when NRIs come back, they become captain scum.

Been listening to a random playlist lately that has a bunch of patriotic songs. This song played and I found myself choking a little bit. Thought it is a good timing too.

Believe it or not. Just a couple of weeks ago I met a gentleman named Tejinder at an Indian party, and he happens to be the grandson of Shaheed Bhagat Singh!

Is n't he the guy who killed some British officer? Is n't it terrorism? If true why are you excited at meeting a terrorist's grandson?

Looks like you dont know the difference between a terrorist, a freedom fighter, a military man, a police man, and a butcher.
