Re: India - the untold story
Thanks for posting this. Having traveled in the Middle East (Yemen for e.g.) and Africa (Nigeria for e.g.), India is a far safer place for foreigners to travel. There are more rapes in American metropolitan areas per capita than in India so the media sometimes blows things out of proportion.southindian wrote:Your report is prime on CNN website now.

Re: India - the untold story
This article made me very uncomfortable. Foreigners planning a trip to India should spend a couple weeks in a high-security prison and then in a quarantine facility, so they can get acclimatized to India.Hellsangel wrote:http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-1023053

do you really believe that or is it because of massive underreporting of sexual crimes in india?goodcitizn wrote: There are more rapes in American metropolitan areas per capita than in India so the media sometimes blows things out of proportion.

Re: India - the untold story
While I don't deny that there are numerous cases of foreigners raped in India, nor do I condone such acts of violence against women, India is being singled out by the media when rapes per capita are much higher in other countries.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:do you really believe that or is it because of massive underreporting of sexual crimes in india?goodcitizn wrote: There are more rapes in American metropolitan areas per capita than in India so the media sometimes blows things out of proportion.
Yes, there is underreporting in India just like in other countries. Besides, rapes are often not reported by the victims themselves. However, I'd think a foreigner getting raped is big news in India and stands a good chance of being reported.
Here's an article by a foreigner who travels a lot to India.
I think all this publicity is great; I am hoping it will accelerate the rate of change and pressure politicians, lawmakers and the police, etc., to act. On the other hand, it is adding a lot of fuel to the very derogatory worldwide media image of India.
But my biggest concern is that the sensationalizing of these crimes against women in India is skewing perception; and missing the big picture. I think it is making India seem more dangerous for travellers than it actually is, compared to other countries (in my opinion); and it is taking the spotlight away from the worldwide problem of violence against women.

Re: India - the untold story
this article did make me feel uncomfortable as well but I am not sure what to make of it. Growing up there in the midst of protective family is very different from visiting as a foreign tourist. As one of the comments read, this woman talks about dancing on the streets during the ganesha festival when most of the undesirable elements wander about. Growing up there, girls would never be allowed to do that, right or wrong, that is the fact. Just like we know what places to "avoid" in the US, there are places to avoid in india as well. one should be cognizant of this.

Re: India - the untold story
Quite a misleading title.Hellsangel wrote:http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-1023053
There is no reason to generalize on the basis of this story or blame India for this unfortunate incident.
Just because I couldn't get a steady job in Canada after a Ph.D. degree for whatever reasons, it doesn't mean that other outsiders had the same kind of experience in Canada or that Canada should shoulder the blame for my unfortunate situation.
Re: India - the untold story
I don't care about stares in any US city but 2 decades ago everyone looked at me as if I'm from another planet. Also, lately since desis are coming to US in plane loads, Indians have made their looks more accustomed to Americans. But I guess the NJ dot-busters was an 80s phenomenon and too far ago.
Indian towns except IT cities are not internet and white-skin savvy except porn. For them white-skin in computer and in their city is like 2 and 2 together.
