The cheating story
Jignes is your typical gujju ABD. Migrated from the Gujarat at an early age. Lives with parents. Had one girlfriend or the other since high school. When he was 25 and his 3 year old relationship ended, his parents suggested him to check out Jigna. A young bright girl from our own Gujarat.
Jignes never imagined he would be having an arranged marriage but he was heart broken. He had a chance to go to India, so he met Jigna and considering all factors, thought that maybe she was the right girl for him and his family.

Re: The cheating story
Jignes made 2 or 3 more trips to India for Jigna, to meet her again, to get engaged, and eventually to get married. Then he brought her here to the Gujarat state of the USA.
Jignes really thought he has hit the lottery marrying super pretty Jigna. Soon enough Jigna became the dutiful daughter in law and a loving wife. She also found a job, and before you know it, they were a happy couple with a baby on the way.

Re: The cheating story
One day Jignes got a call from a woman. She introduced herself as Aneri, wife of Devang, who Jignes vaguely knew as Jigna's colleague, and who was also in his late twenties.
Aneri pleaded with Jignes to meet him, and when Jignes met her, she showed him email proofs of the affair between Jigna and Devang. She also told him that this is not Devang's first offense and that he is very flirtatious by nature.

Jignes was devastated. He went home and confronted Jigna. She broke down and admitted the affair.
Jignes was heartbroken. The timing wasn't right either, with the baby on the way. Jigna did assure him it was his baby. The affair had begun during her pregnancy.
Considering they were to start a family, and Jigna seemed repentant, Jignes thought of giving their marriage another chance. He tried to come to terms with the cheating.

Re: The cheating story
Aneri didn't leave Devang either. They had a little son to worry about.
After the birth of their baby, Jignes continued to try to forget about Jigna's cheating. He tried for two years. But he just could not bring himself to trust her again. He began getting suspicious of every move of Jigna's. He always wondered what she was upto. If she was doing it again.
Eventually he realized this was healthy for neither himself nor Jigna, who was forever faced with a suspecting husband. He realized they both were too young to be dealing with this shyt for the rest of their lives. And that it was better they both started new lives for themselves while they still could.
He asked Jigna to leave. She did. They have been living separately but close by and taking joint care of their kid on a daily basis. Both are dedicated parents, and in full agreement regarding the kid's well being. Their divorce is under way.
Do you think they can or should get back together? Is there another hope?

Re: The cheating story
Amazing stuff. Now all you need to do is track down Jigna and get her side of the story. This foolio Jignes should have boffed Aneri to even out things. Effin n00bs.

Re: The cheating story
She was newly married, in her 20s, seemed happy in her marriage, was also pregnant, from conservative india, but cheated on her husband anyway.....just like that. Kaiku? Jignes never cared to find out what the problem was.

seems like garden variety stuff. jhumpa lahiri plumbs the immigrant indian communities, especially the bengali community for stories like these.
make them a bit older, white, and suburban and you know where john updike's fuel comes from.

Re: The cheating story
Yeah, that must've been Jignes's line of thinking too: Things JUST happen even when never planned. In that situation, one should accept whatever comes one's way. Jignes couldn't do that. He was constantly worried that it might happen again and hence the divorce after a couple yrs. problem, no?Marathadi-Saamiyaar wrote:Problem? what problem?kinnera wrote:She was newly married, in her 20s, seemed happy in her marriage, was also pregnant, from conservative india, but cheated on her husband anyway.....just like that. Re: The cheating story
story continued twenty years on....
kid grows up, comes to learn of mom's youthful infidelity from notes he finds stashed away on her google phone from twenty years ago, finds out about devang and where he lives, follows him to a friendly neighborhood starbucks. picks up an empty latte cup he threw away and does DNA analysis to discover he is d's kid. confronts him and says, "pApA! huṁ tamārī putra chuṁ!". embraces and tears follow, and father and son walk away into the sunset to a fishing trip, or to a dandiya ras party to celebrate their newly found relationship.

I wonder if Jignes did a paternity test.

Re: The cheating story
I do remember reading one such story from jumpa lahiri. The woman gets pregnant from a house guest who was her husband's punjabi friend. It happens just once and she bears his child. No one knows abt it. She confesses that to the guide on their trip to india.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:seems like garden variety stuff. jhumpa lahiri plumbs the immigrant indian communities, especially the bengali community for stories like these.

tale as old as time. change names, context, and culture, rinse and repeat. woman obtains stronger and better genes at low or no financial cost to herself, and man gets to propagate his stuff with no cost to him. usually the jigneses of the world, the working stiffs are none the wiser.Vidya Bagchi wrote:

Hmmm...MaxEntropy_Man wrote:many species of birds are nominally monogamous too.
I remember this from rajneesh's interview: he was advocating IVF from donors, that woman shouldn't bind themselves to marriage, that they shld be free to go to sperm banks and choose the best DNA to bear children. And men with good DNA should volunteer to donate their sperm, and that all men and women should raise the kids as global children unselfishly. If followed as he proposes, he visualizes the world full of ppl with good DNA. Fine and dandy, but he fails to mention that only women with good DNA should have their eggs fertilized.
Anyway, he thinking was pretty out of the box, esp for his time.
