Guess mine too. And it doesn't even feel like an addiction, that's the scary part. 10 years ago, only yahoo games was my vice. Now it's the laptop. I feel so free when I am not on it.
My latest addiction. Finishing up season 6 of the office on netflix. It is still hilarious. I watch it with headphones on, and every once in a while burst out laughing. Likewise, BIL is addicted on Lost series while he forgets his ex (he has also taken up horse riding lessons, fyi, and next month we may go sky diving). He sometimes hooks Lost series up on tv. And can't figure out why I burst out laughing while some srs scene is going on there.

far from me trying to unravel identities of ppl I interact with, on the internets. I got zero curiosity in that regard. if you want to pretend that you're a woman trying to be a man or viceversa, that's up to you and your therapist to explore.

Yeah, he has decided he won't start any conversation with her for at least 4 weeks, and if possible will extend it to another 4 weeks. He doesn't even talk with us about her anymore. She did email him a couple of times on stuff like thanking him for returning the cable box, and notifying him that she will half share the loss on apartments. To those, he just replies curtly, but in my opinion, too promptly. I am guessing she's just waiting till August before she could serve him a divorce notice (they have to be in PA for at least 6 months before they could start a divorce). Until then, there would be peace in the Whitney household.

So he decided to try that... one lesson, one hour, and he was exhausted enough not to think about anything else. He also bbc'ed both days, and y'day kids, hubs, and him were in the backyard for 4-5 hours. Good therapy, from his perspective.

Like TW and Kris, my biggest addiction is the internet. My wife thought alcohol was my other addiction, so I proved her wrong by staying completely away for two months. I used to be addicted to tobacco, but kicked that a while ago. In some ways, I think kicking the tobacco habit was the hardest thing I've accomplished.Propagandhi711 wrote:what are yours? mine are poker and poker. that's crazy, being able to kick a habit like that. I havent had to quit any of my addictions just yet. am hoping they'll run their natural course of indulgence-indulgence-overindulgence-sick of it-quit. I quit alcohol cold turkey that way.

Re: addictions
Yeah, going cold turkey on alcohol wasn't difficult at all. I didn't really feel tempted to drink even in company. I guess alcohol is not really addictive at the physiological level like tobacco is. And knowing that I would drink again after the two months were up probably made it easier. It was a lot harder to quit smoking; I tried unsuccessfully a few times. Finally I had to use nicorette gum for a few weeks to kick it completely. Now I don't even feel tempted to smoke when I am drinking and others in the group are smoking.Propagandhi711 wrote:that's crazy, being able to kick a habit like that. It's not a pleasant experience. If you make it past 20 without forming a habit, you will not get addicted to tobacco, so no harm trying once.Tracy Whitney wrote:I want to smoke at least once.

I have this big phobia of doing anything even once. Thanks to my dad. His theory was, if there is something bad, than it is easiest to resist it the first time. All people smoke that first cigarette, or drink that first drink thinking they won't get addicted to it. And then it's harder to refuse it the second time (people jump on saying, since you did it once, you can do it again), and even 10-20 times later, they are still cocky that they can't succumb to it. It only gets worse when they still think they can quit anytime. But they can't.
So it's in the best interest of yourself. If you think something is addictive (or bad), just don't do it the first time. Stay on this side of the line, and you will get the maximum intertia to stay on this side.

no, he hasnt. he's like 69 so why even try to quit at this age is his thinking. I give him shit whenever I see him smoke but he waves me off.

my husband quit smoking after being a heavy smoker in college days without any patch or anything. He has tremendous will power and I respect him for that. I hear people saying its hard to quit smothing this that..my own brother is 5 packs a day type or is he pack a day..watever...he smokes one after another cigarette non stop...and can't quit. disgusting habit.

Re: addictions
My father-in-law is the same way. Has smoked all his adult life, and gets a lot of heat from his children about his smoking. He has been OK so far, and frankly at his age I don't know if the incremental damage he can avoid is worth the withdrawal symptoms. So I don't feel like joining in the pressure from his children in asking him to quit.Propagandhi711 wrote:no, he hasnt. he's like 69 so why even try to quit at this age is his thinking. Indian or non-Indian, I hear more bad stuff about marriage than good stuff. The more I hear about marriages, the more I feel like I've escaped some great mishap so far in life by remaining single. I am wondering if I am getting a realistic view and forming a sensible opinion of marriage? Or, is my view skewed because people just tend to speak more often and louder about negative things than positive things?

Something dawned on me last weekend. I was on the road, and I remembered CH only on the third day - not even when I checked emails at night on someone else's PC. Perhaps, the new CH seems to have balanced my interest in Old CH. So, I am now well balanced - so to speak....
Also, both my MWJ are so people intensive, I am in constant touch with real people and talking about real and personal problems only to be balanced by the real problems of the fake CHers....

alcohol. guilty as charged. once a week. never more, never less. "never more" is a good thing but "never less" is what gives it the status of addiction. i am a habitual personality. then again, one may recall what my great parsi unkil, firoze SodaWaterBottleOpenerWala, once famously said - "a man without vice is like venkat without rice : impossible."
i am not at all addicted to social n/w, cell phone or TV. and although i eat a masala paan on ewwWWrrRy sunday, i don't call it addiction.

Well, if alcohol once a week is an addiction, than so is paan every sunday. For completing the picture, let's bring in some taash ke patte and naach-gaana. LOL.

Re: addictions
well, i am not yet awarding that status to paan because i wasn't eating it when i was in the US. that's relatively a recent thing. i've been drinking alcohol every weekend for about 7-8 years now. there must have been no more than 2-3 weekends in that time period when i have not.

once a week? that's peanuts. you're practically on teetotel. you need to worry if it's daily or every other day. or if the said weekend intake is at binging levels.

hmm. i have three large drinks (180 ml in all) on saturdays. what makes me think it is an addiction is because i've been doing it for several years. i get 10 on 10 for my consistency, though. well, i am not ashamed of it, so no problemo.

no, both you guys ENJOY alcohol. that's no problem. just like if you're married, wanking to porn once a week is no problem. same with alcohol, under 10 drinks a week is perfectly cool. it's practically written in the bylaws.
