Alinea Empty Alinea

Post by gone Thu Sep 05, 2013 11:45 am

Anniversary dinner last weekend at Alinea was wonderful. Molecular gastronomy at its best. We flew into the city two days in advance because we were afraid that if our flight was delayed, we would miss the dinner. We made the reservation in January of this year and booked the flights once we had a confirmed reservation via email.

We started out with edible balloons and ended with dessert without plates. We did The Tour (23 courses with 20 wine pairing flights). Each course was the size of a teaspoon, delicious, and beautifully plated.

Grant Acatz personally came out to serve our dessert right on the table. Between courses, our waiters came to our table with complimentary offerings like soup (two tiny sips worth), chocolate pieces (so dark, bitter, and wonderful), and other free food stuff which we kept declining because we wanted to leave room for the courses we were paying for. We took a cab back to our hotel because we were stuffed, drunk, and happy. Well worth $500 per person, and we tipped 20%. We also bought the Alinea cookbook but the recipes aren't your average easy recipe.

Nice going, Trolle Lena. You have made a lot of people envious.

And some people here are going to ask if the rest of the night was as, if not more, wonderful than your experience at Alinea. some people.

Ps: Happy belated anniversary!

congratulations on the ann. how many years now?

Sounds like a great dinner. Google says it's in Chicago. Will check this place out when a millionare starts fancying me (i.e. the day when pigs fly). Next time when you go, save the dark chocolates for me please.

Haha! Thanks y'all!! The rest of the night was sweet too. Lots of cuddling but we were too stuffed and too drunk for anything else.

All I can say to Hell's Angel is it wasn't my intention to make anyone jealous. We spent a total of three grand for the flights, hotel stay, and the dinners at Alinea and Next. I know men who give about that much in jewelry alone to their wife on their anniversary. I told DH that I didn't want any jewelry because I wouldn't know where to wear it, so we planned travel and food instead.

VB, you don't need a millionaire to spend three grand for the two of you. My husband just paid off all his student loans. I can assure you he doesn't even have half a million in the bank.

Well, I cook more than 600 healthy, nutritious meals a year for DH. Everything from sushi to Paleo to desi to high brow French food for 300-plus days. The least he can do for me is take me to a three-star Michelin restaurant. It may be pretentious to some. It's like NASCAR...I don't understand why some people are into it. Likewise, we're into pretentious food :-)
