She knew beforehand what she was getting into and she should not complain.

You cannot expect a Madrasa or a Christian institution to change their rules - not even the Govt. VIT is a private university and hence it is being run almost per old-fashioned rules.

They are ranked pretty high #10 or 11 ahead of many IITs and hence their answer "Take it or Leave it."

The VIT university campus looks like something descended from heaven. It is in Vellore which is not a prominent town.

Where did these guys get the money to build this place?

Also don't forget that India officially (with Govt's blessings) is the land of religious laws which apply differently to men and women.

Have no idea. It started in an old Building my parents lived on a street right near it. There were several colleges that started during that period and have languished - rather grown - at normal pace; TN Engineering College, Jeppiar, Amritha Institute, etc. SRM which used to run a school - switched to college/univ mode and has grown. But, this VIT was nowhere in the 80s and it has grown at the same (rapid) pace as Singapore national University and several other Hong Kong and Tailwan Univ started in the late 80s and 90s.

Here is one clue: this is a 75 yr old DMK dude - an ex MP and MLA from DMK/ADMK..and naturally with connections..

But, unlike the rest of the rogues, he seems to have really sunk his money into the education field and I dont see him building industrial or real estate empire. This seems to be along the lines of PSG Tech in Coimbatore - the politically connected family (a Naidu, if you will) sunk its teeth exclusively into education field.

BTW, this Gviswanathan also "appears" to be a naidu. The Naidus of TN are upper caste but more philanthropy- oriented in education and religious fields.
