Of 381 college admissions officers who answered a Kaplan telephone questionnaire this year, 31 percent said they had visited an applicant’s Facebook or other personal social media page to learn more about them — a five-percentage-point increase from last year. More crucially for those trying to get into college, 30 percent of the admissions officers said they had discovered information online that had negatively affected an applicant’s prospects.

It is human nature to extract any info in any which way possible before buying a valuable commodity. Schools are try to "buy" students who bring recognition to their schools. The social media shows the "all-natural" side of applicants. Expect all employees and universities and spouses/lovers to search the social media to see the hidden info.

How do they connect a "screen name" with a real person's name? Are there services out there that provide a probabilistic estimate that a screen name and real name are the same person?

You will be stunned to see how most people use their real name in Facebook (bcz it "demands" so) and in twitter. Most are publicity-liking folks. How can they claim about number of likes and comments if they used fake names? Schools and employers may not make an effort to find fakies.

Not hard to do because most people add a pic to their profile.

Not to mention their address, phone number, birthdate...hey but they are smart bcz they dont give their Soc sec #... Razz
