Re: Snoopgate: Firm owned by Girl's family had bagged projects from Gujarat government
NEW DELHI: Congress stepped up the heat on 'snoopgate', alleging that Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi had such "close relations" with the young woman who was put under surveillance that the state government took care of even her fuel and mobile telephone expenses.
Gujarat Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil released what he claimed was information accessed through RTI to allege that the Modi government spent Rs 5,153 from the public exchequer to meet the young woman's expenses on "petrol and mobile" during the Kutch Ranotsav.
Gohil said Modi and the girl had a falling out over her growing contact with an IAS officer but then a compromise was reached following which she received lucrative contracts.
"The contract was given to a company that was started by 'the same madam' who was put under surveillance. Both the directors of the company are still the brothers of 'this madam'," Gohil, former leader of opposition in Gujarat told a press conference.
Gohil said the woman's brothers had earlier acknowledged to a newspaper that their company, Eco Librium Energy, had no work for eight months after it was launched. But they got the contract for a big smart grid pilot project from the Gujarat government, Gohil said, adding that no bid was invited.
Questioning the benefits given to the family, he said, "The law does not say that government money be spent on the security of the friend of the chief minister. No law says that if CM eats with the friend, you attach a bill of Rs 12,500, give petrol and mobile expenses."
The bid to establish proximity between Modi, the girl and her family comes in the backdrop of a purported letter from the woman's father where he claimed that it was the family who had asked the chief minister to arrange security for her.
The letter, whose veracity has been doubted by the National Commission for Women, has been cited by the BJP to defend the Modi government against the charge of illegal surveillance.
Rebuffing the father's letter, Gohil said the illegal surveillance issue had to be inquired into even if the girl said she had no problems with it. "This is a non-compoundable case and has to go to court," he said.
Gohil accused the BJP of orchestrating denials from the girl's family in a desperate bid to put a lid on the issue.
"Even the letter from the girl's father in which he claims he had asked the CM to provide security to the girl was distributed by the BJP office," he said.
"All we are saying is that a party that demanded the resignation of former railway minister Pavan Bansal, that seeks votes in the name of Lord Ram, should stand trial by fire and a probe by a sitting Supreme Court judge should be ordered," he said.
"He (Modi) should quit if he has any morals. But Modi and morals always travel in opposite directions," he added.
