HYDERABAD: India's Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), also known as Mangalyaan, has crossed and gone beyond the Earth's sphere of influence.

The spacecraft traversed beyond the Sphere of Influence (SOI) extending about 9,25,000km at around 1.14am on Wednesday, the Indian Space Research Organization ( Isro) announced this morning.

The spacecraft had traveled a distance of 5,36,000km by 5pm on December 2. It crossed the distance of Moon's orbit on December 2.

Mangalyaan was launched from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on November 5, 2013 in a bid to reach out to the red planet.

The success of the spacecraft would carry India into an exclusive club of nations including the United States, Europe, and Russia, whose probes have orbited or landed on Mars.
