india vs sa tour grades
Teams: India started well. Surprised everyone by applying themselves. Then they lost plot and started playing like an inexperienced side. Ended the tour below average.
sa started rather over confident and bowled poorly in first test. But regrouped by second test and acquitted themselves well by second test.
India batting: kohli, pujara and rahane did well. Vijay justified the confidence in him. Shikar dhawan and rohit sharma failed to deliver. Jadeja, ashwin failed with bat. Tail not helpful.
India bowling: did ok in helpful conditions in first test first innings. After that they neverlooked like. a bowling unit capable of getting 20 wits. Sami should be persisted with. Zaheer and ishant must go. India does not have bowlers who can be called test bowlers outside India.
Sa: both du did well. Petersen was combative.rest of the team proved themselves for few years.
Sa reestablished that they are a far more talented team than India.

and who will replace them? this seems like the argument that dravid and laxman must go that was trotted out from time to time whenever these guys failed in one or two matches in the 2000s. it was not like there was talent breaking down the doors back then. we had to wait until the pujaras, kohlis, and vijays showed up and started contributing. i don't think there are any fast bowlers who can replace these guys any time soon. and zak is deadly in swinging conditions. that is his wheelhouse. to not take him to england would be a terrible mistake. he got his career back after a stint in county cricket. england is where he comes alive.

Dravid and laxman stepping aside allowed pujara and at a laterdate rahane to come in and consolidate. Sachin was actually hanging around too long blocking entry to others. The veterans by stepping aside prior to tests in India allowed the new comers to start playing in Indian conditions.
Zak did great in England. But that was in 2007. He broke down quite often after that. He is a treasure trove of tricks. So he can be accommodated for a tour or two and help the younger ones. Ishant fails to be effective again and again as he lost pace and did not replace it with knack like zaheer. He also fails to display a strategy to get batsmen out. A new talent must be tried in ishants place asap.

our cricket has always been based on its batting strengths. amassing huge scores and having the one or two hard working bowlers bowl long spells and slowly get wkts has been our main match winning strategy. ripping through oppositions in quick time has in my memory not been a strategy. just changing horses will do nothing. a fundamental attitude change towards bowlers and bowling will.

That was the sub continental strategy. In India, the board controlled pitches. Low bounce slow pace dust bowls that help spinners later in the game or rank turners (Madras used to be one of the happy hunting grounds for Indian spinners).

Changing Indian local conditions to support multitude of bowling styles (spin, fast and bouncy, and swing) is the long term solution. But bcci will never spend time and money to institute such fundamental change. Too much hardwork.
