Mulayam and Akhilesh have failed the people of Uttar Pradesh. One has to speculate whether there is some secret understanding between the SP and BJP to polarize the UP electorate. As i see it, SP is going to be the big loser because muslims will not be voting for it any more. BJP--whose legislators played a critical role in fanning the communal violence by distributing fake video clips--stands to gain in parts of western UP due to the communal polarization. But i don't think BJP will gain the kind of seats in UP that they were hoping to get. For one thing the contest in UP will involve several players--BSP of Mayawati, SP of Mulayam, Congress, BJP, and Aam Aadmi Party. In western UP there is also Ajit Singh's regional party. And now there is also the Aam Aadmi party. So the BJP dream of getting 50 seats from UP looks like a pipe dream.
