The sense of belonging can stem from the absence of a place to call home. So feels Amrita Lahiri, who says that as a Bengali who grew up in the USA and now living in Mumbai, she “belongs nowhere or everywhere”. In Kuchipudi, which has come to be her calling, she sees a similar synthesis of cultures.

“Kuchipudi shares the features of both Bharatanatyam and Odissi,” she says. "In fact, it is much like its place of origin, Andhra Pradesh, which is tucked in between Tamil Nadu and Odisha. While it has postures borrowed from Bharatanatyam like the ‘aramandi’, the fluid movement of the torso is quite like Odissi. A combination of these features makes it rather unique and there aren’t many who practice it,” says the petite dancer. Dressed casually in a blue cotton sari and her face devoid of make-up, the grace of her form is unmistakable.
