India's War of Independence, 1857
known as Sepoy Mutiny in British parlance. Per the Deccan Herald story they found a well in Punjab where about 160 freedom fighters bodies were dumped by the British. The story is interesting in that everything that I have read before said that Sikhs, Gorkhas, and Pathans were on the British side during the war. Sikhs were just subdued by the British (1857 was less than 20 years after the Sikh Maharajah Ranjit Singh died), and the Gorkhas soundly kicked British ass again and again over several wars and confrontations, and the British turned around and simply made Nepal their "protectorate" ). To subdue the Sikhs, British used Bengal soldiers (Bengal back then was W.Bengal+Bangladesh+Bihar+UP+Orissa), and so the Sikhs had this serious grudge against Bengali soldiers, and they took full revenge for their earlier disgrace on the Sepoys during the 1857 war. And now thosee dead Bengal sepoys are being honored in Punjab!

What happened in 1857 was a NORTH Indian war or NORTH Indian mutiny. Not a sinlge Southern soldier or ruler joined the northerners in tghis war or mutiny.

Yes.....it was more of a Muslim vs other non-hindus war.
