Love affair of the childish kind
"ீங்கள் உயர்ந்தவர்"
This was Ragini's reply to Bala's question " என்னை பத்தி என்ன நெனைக்கற?" (What do you think about me?). This happened during their very first rendezvous at the post office. Ragini sent him a note through the servant maid. She wanted to meet him there,
Bala was puzzled. He was 5 feet 3 inches. She was almost 5' 10". How on earth he could be உயர்ந்தவர்?
What Ragini meant was she thought Bala was a great man. "ீங்கள் உயர்ந்தவர்" literally translates to "You are a tall man." That is the danger of machine translation. It is a different topic altogether.
Ragini was doing her B.com at the women's college not too far from that town. Her father was the station master at the Pallavaram railway station. She had an younger sister who can at best be described as a little bit nutty.
She demanded that Bala's family should not ask for any dowry when they get married. It really shows how some Indian women were practical and assertive even those days.
What was that attracted Bala to Ragini? Was it her light skin? Or her bluish eyes? Or the fact that she was an Iyengar? Or was it that Bala had too much time on his hands during that summer vacation?
To be continued....
