Americanized Indian
I overheard Ravi, the Andhra fellow who was a contractor like me talk about Adi Sankara to Greg, a white guy on our team. He was telling Greg that he and his family follow the saint's teachings. This was around the team Kanchi Sankaracharya getting bailed out for the murder of Sankarraman. The gulti had a terrible accent, Americans found hard to follow what he was talking about. Still he persisted in impressing Greg with all the facts he knew about American politics. Greg was complaining to me "I don't understand what Ravi says."
Since Ravi brought up Adi Sankara, I asked him whether he heard about Kanchi Sankracharya's predicaments with the law. "I don't read Indian newspapers", Ravi said emphatically. I asked him, why? There must be a reason why he doesn't read Indian nespapers. Is it their quality of reporting or the quality of English or shoddy analysis etc.. I asked Ravi.
"I just don't," the gulti said in his gulti accent.

Re: Americanized Indian
Poor Sankaracharya was framed in the murder case. The hapless guy, Sankar raman, was prolly murdered to frame Sankaracharya. It's all a big ploy. Anyway, that's not the point here.
Ravi having a heavy accent is also not the point here. Not just Indians/gults, most everyone, esp immigrants, have some kind of an accent or the other. The point is, sensing the mood of the listener. If the listener seemed bored or puzzled or disinterested, one should cut down one's talking. Shouldn't keep on blabbering and blabbering. Ravi should've been more sensible.

Did you ask him whether or not he considers America as his country or you think his accent would be a bottleneck to call America "my country". I agree with you that we Telugus (or gultis as you put) are terrible (except for HPS products) at spoken/written English, certainly occupy the lower rungs compared to any Indian state when it comes to English prowess but we do top the charts with our expertise in conArtistry (like fake degrees, smuggling H1-B candidates). Rishi,
I read this story, but it lacks the clarity I see you in your other stories (the Manjay Chronicles, for instance).
1)Are you saying Ravi considers himself an American because he does not read Indian newspapers?
2) Are you saying he should read them because he has an accent?
3) It is puzzling why Ravi thought Greg would have an interest in Sankara. Is there a piece missing like Greg saying to Ravi that he had once picked up the Viveka Choodamani at the Shambala while he was at Berkeley that triggered this discussion?
P.S. Bring back Manjay.

1. Greg was a conservative Republican. He did not think much of third world stuff.
2. I thought the way Ravi dismissed the Indian newspapers was pretentious. IMO he was trying to act more American than Americans. But he could not overcome the 25 years of conditioning in India by his family and culture there. This Adi Sankara stuff came out of his mouth unconsciously.
3.IMO Rav really could not succeed well in his attempts to Americanize.

There are community colleges that provide courses on creative writing. Look for some in your area.

It is very difficult to put accent into that sentence. Try as I might , I cannot even guess how to put telugu accent into that one.

TW,
You have to start to listen before you make up accents.

That kolaveri song accent is Tamil-english accent. That's how Rishi must be talking. Don't mix telugu and tamil english accents, pls.Tracy Whitney wrote:lol arre.. ok maybe i overstressed on the aai and jest.. but i was giving the kolaveri song kinda effect to just and don't.

Speaking of telugu accents, last week I interviewed someone who is now a US Citizen and been here for about 15+ years. And he had a very clear and distinct 'u' ending whenever he paused or completed the sentence. His choice of words and sentence construction is good but just that 'u' sound made it very jarring to the ears. I do, frequently, interact with vaidika priests having just elementary school education and even they didn't sound as bad as this guy. Technically he was good so my recommendation was to hire.
