He appears to follow the following rule enunciated by Sanskrit poet Bharavi's (the author of mahaakaavya "kiraataarjuneeyam") dad on bestowing praise.
pratyaksho guravah stutyaah,
paroksho mitra baandhavaah;
karmaante daasa bhrityaascha
na putrakaah kadaachana.
Meaning - A teachers is worthy of praise directly on his face, praise your friends and relatives indirectly, praise those who work for you after they have successfully accomplished assigned tasks, but never praise your son (or daughter) either directly or indirectly.

Nice poem. I hope Nadella becomes as successful as Indra Nooyi in steering his company to success.

Yes, it's a nice verse. They story behind the verse is -
Bharavi was a child prodigy wrt to poetry and everybody was amazed at his facility with words and meter. But his dad, who was also a poet, never said a word of praise to him. Bharavi was mad at his dad for not recognizing his genius, and wanted to kill him and was ready to roll a heavy object from "ataka" (elevated storage) onto his dad's head when he was eating dinner. Then his mom posed the same question to his dad -- "why don't you ever say "ata boy" to our dear Bharavi. The dad replied with the above verse (never to praise a son), and said praising a son or daughter leads to their "aayu-ksheenam" (reduced longevity).
Bharavi realized his mistake and fell on his dad's feet asking for forgiveness and also requested a punishment for his wicked thoughts. His dad said - "okay, go to your in-laws' house uninvited, and stay there for six months." Bharavi was relieved at the simple punishment and went to his in-laws' house.
They fussed over him and treated him real nice for a week, and then started assigning simple tasks like going to the market to buy veggies or some such things. As time went on, he was asked to take care of the cattle, milk the cows, make cow-dung cakes etc. Then they started asking him to play with BILs' young kids, and then taking care of their babies (like keeping the screamers clean, washing their asses etc.). Then they started to find faults in his work and didn't think twice about raising their voices.
After that treatment, Bharavi never visited his in-laws house for the rest of his life.

dont the latest psycho babble insist on building up a child's self esteem by praising them constantly and giving them "stars" for doing even the elementary of tasks? isnt that what leads to the kind of excessive selfesteem you see in the likes of mainsheit without anything to back it up with?

Just guessing. Probably it's not a bad idea to praise a child for good behavior / academic achievement, but praising a grown son/daughter for professional accomplishments may be bad.

Boasting about one's children's achievement or greatness in front of others is very bad. Complimenting and patting on their backs where due (and not overdone) isn't bad at all.indophile wrote:Just guessing.
