Re: A sign of the future under Narendra Modi: Dissent and disagreement is already being crushed by the powerful
Why are many educated and intelligent Indians supporting a Fascist?
Probably because they think neo fascism is the answer to India's problems and that this neo Fascism will get rid of corruption, inefficiency, etc. These people need to look back into history and reflect on Germany under Hitler. If Modi comes to power, things will become worse and not better. For one thing, freedom of speech and expression will be seriously compromised. Criticism of the govt will not be tolerated beyond a point. A dictatorial mindset will set in. Secondly, the polity will be divided on the basis of religion. This can have serious repercussions with respect to India's sovereignty because there is a muslim majority in Kashmir who will invariably find Modi unacceptable. Secondly, there are large muslim populations in several states like Kerala, West Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh. Law and order problems and communal riots could become the order of the day in these states.
The industrialists who are backing Modi are in my opinion being short sighted. A country needs stability more than anything else for industrial growth and progress and Modi will invariably and inevitably usher in instability because modern India will not tolerate a fascist dictator.
