Post by Silly Point Sun Feb 16, 2014 3:41 pm

I have been around this forum for years and I can't understand this Fight between NI and SI...
Maybe having grown up in Hong Kong my identity was always INDIAN, not South Indian or North Indian..

So i don't get it ...

I am asking not to be funny, I am asking to understand..

If you grew up in Hong Kong, why is / was your identity always Indian, not Chineses or HongKonger?

i was raised to be proud of my heritage, my identity was linked to my heritage.. Identity is closed linked to your culture, i grew up with India in the house, indian food, tamil and malayalam being spoken in the house. When asked I was always from India.. I can't reject that to call myself Chinese or Hong Konger..

PS if you need a longer explanation of Identity Formation in children lemme know.. will draft something for you

PPS: the veshti on the right man.. is sexy!!

i was attempting to do synthesis, hence synthu-time.

dabbA-kattu is a style of wearing a vEshti designed to maintain the family jewels at an optimum temperature while running the risk of giving offense by exposing hairy legs. like so:

btw, there are certain (south?) indian words whose origin i have not been able to figure out with certainty to this day. here are a few.

the common vest undershirt called banian (buni-yan in tamil) is common everywhere, except in the north it is referred to as bunyaaan.

chaddi for underwear.

and i am going to make some tamilians cringe, the word kakkoos for toilet and also the act of toileting. in my grandparents' generation this was said with aplomb, now it has become a cringeworthy word. i have no idea where this came from.

brinjals for egglplant - presumably for aubergines.

It refers to as 'Pleasure' indicating the joy ride may be. I remember this usage in Tirunelveli. (my dad from there and mom from Thanjavoor). On my recent travel, visited some old towns in Tirunelveli.

Since all are in for dabbankutthu songs...

Corresponding to the tamil word Kakkoos is the Hindi word Kakka although there is another ( more refined) word for the same thing and that is Pakhaana. I presume that when you say toilet or going to toilet you actually mean shitting and not pissing. For pissing the words are pishaab ( more refined) and also su-su in Hindi. In colloquial hindi another word for shitting is hagnaa, while another word for pissing is mootna.
