The interview was given to IBN7 which is the sister channel of CNN IBN. IBN7 is a Hindi channel.

As for as "they" are concerned, if you do not know Hindi, you are not Indian. So how can a minister not know Hindi? So this fellow wasw asking questions in Hindi.

Forget kalam. Indira promised to learn Tamil within 6 months in 1980...then?

You should ask Chidambaram - why was he answering in English if he was addressing Hindi-speaking viewers? :-)

I bet, most Bhaiyyas thought that he was giving his opinion on roti and aaloo curry.
