I used to follow this story very closely for professional reasons.

This article was an eye-opener for me. It's a dated article(june 2012), but a good read nevertheless:

Never used it but know people who have. There was a famous Hawala operator in the US that people used to send money to. He would then have his people in India give money to your people. Reasons for picking him were better exchange rate and convenience.
