The racial differences

Ayyars are by physical composition more direct descendants of Aryans invaders than the Ayyangars. The former have fair complexions, long noses and the physical features of Aryan race similar to that of Germans, Iranians, etc.

Ayyar Brahmins claim racial superiority over all other people in the world like Hitler and the Nazis of Germany did. The Ayyars are fire worshippers like the Parsis / Zorastrarians.

Whenever Aryans are living the Sanskrit language is offered to the status of their mother tongue. They used to make foolish claims that all the knowledge is found in Sanskrit literature so that every body must learn Sanskrit to seek knowledge. But Sanskrit is a dead language, neither being spoken nor used in writing. If all knowledge is found in Sanskrit scriptures, why should the Brahmin study sciences in English and European languages? It is only to fool other people. By this they would hold control over the other people.

But Ayyangars in general by physical composition are not Aryans by facial qualities. They look like the original inhabitants of India by having dark and semi dark complexions. Ayyangars are found more in the southern part of India whose mother tongues are the respective state languages, like Kannada, Tamil, etc. Moreover they do not accept Vedas like Rig, Yajur etc. Instead Tamil Ayyangars have Tamil religious poems like Tiruppavai, Thiruvembavai etc. In worship also Tamil is widely used in Temples. In addition to this they are never opposed to the use of Tamil in Temple "Archanai" or propitiations?

===> It looks like Ayyangars are more humane than Ayyars.

This is exactly the opposite of what people think about Iyers and Iyengars.

I am a complete ignoramus on the topic of Iyer and Ayyangar. But that never stopped me either. So let me blurt out my ill informed impressions of these groups.

Both are incredibly successful groups of brahmins.

I have seen and interacted with people from both groups and am impressed by the individual talent.

In terms of physical features, I thought Ayyangars are taller, more fair skinned, purohit types. Of course I may be talking about hema Malini types. While I saw some stunning beauties in Iyers, I have also seen many iyers who have local complexion.

One of my misconceptions that Iyers were Saivites was cleared by Sulekha posts. I still think Ayyangars are Vaishnavaites.

It would interesting to see if some one can write a serious research book on the reasons for Iyer and Ayyangar groups. Their success is not limited to TN but extends to USA. It could not be just because of their position in Hindu society. It has something to do with their internal family dynamics of motivation, demand for success, teaching the young, and a little bit of genes.

Author of the blog appears to opine the same.

"Differences in religious symbols

Ayyar apply cow dung ash on the forehead and over the body in three
horizontal lines. But Ayyar Brahmin apply "Nama" (V or Y shaped) on
their forehead and over the body."

Should one of those two read ayyangars instead of Ayyar and ayyar Brahmin?

Ok...Here is SaamiYaar's concluding remarks:

Ayyars (or Iyers) are indeed Saivites. and Iyengars (or Ayyangars) are Vaishnavites.

Iyers apply ash (the Lord of Cremation grounds - Shiva) horizontally on the forehead and arms.

yengars use sandalwood and kumkum to apply 3 vertical stripes. The orthodox ones would not even TOUCH the ash.

Of course, there is yet another group that is even more orthodox in the picture. But I will defer on that one for the time being.
