Bareilly BSP nominee owns varsity but no car
BAREILLY: Umesh Gautam, Bahujan Samaj Party's lok Sabha candidate from Bareilly, has become a hot topic in the district. Despite filing a declaration of owning assets valued at around Rs 5.81 crore before the election commission, Gautam does not own a vehicle till date. The affidavit submitted before the district election officer (DEO) bears testimony to this rather unexpected disclosure.
People are wondering how a leader who owns a private university, has stakes in several business ventures and moves around in swanky cars with a bunch of security personnel, does not own a car or a scooter.
The immovable property listed by him includes a residential house and a flat in Rajendra Nagar and Noida respectively valued at around Rs 3.66 core. Besides owning Rs 2.87 lakh in cash and a hefty bank balance of Rs 50 lakh, Gautam owns jewellery worth Rs 26.86 lakh while his wife's ornaments are valued at around Rs 25.31 lakh. The marginal difference in the worth of couple's jewellery became an instant topic of discussion in the political circles, with many of his critics saying that "maybe netaji wears more jewellery than his wife and is following on the footsteps of all time favourite music director Bappi Lahiri.
However, despite jointly owning assets worth over Rs 10 crore, the couple claims to owe around Rs 3.25 crore of debt to financial institutions. The declaration made mandatory by the election commission has brought political leaders defaulting payments to banks and several other financial institutions under the scanner.
