i once did a rough translation of the words in this song:

Edit: Actually from what i remember i picked up the translation from somewhere on the net and then refined it further.

One of Nusrat's best qawaalis is one called Mast Nazaron se. He performed this qawaali several times over the years--often in different variations. When i say different variations i mean the words in this qawaali are partially changed in its different versions to give it some variety.

This is one of the better versions of Mast Nazaron se:

thanks for the suggestions. you translated the line, "Khuda ke liya chor do ab yeh parda…" as "for god's sake let go of the veil". i've heard that unlike ghazals, qawwalis have hidden religious/spiritual messages hidden behind what appears to be overtly a love song. is it possible that this line can also be translated as "let go of the veil of separation that exists between god and human"?

that is correct. the sufis talk of haqiqi ishq which is the love between God and an individual and majazi ishq which is love between man and woman (or, i suppose, between male-male and female-female) and often when a song seems to be a romantic love song about two individuals it is actually a song about the love between and individual and God. However, some of the songs sung by Nusrat are out and out romantic songs while others are sufi songs. Whether a song is a sufi song or a straightforward romantic song is i think left open for the listener to interpret on his own.

i didn't like afreen afreen. i don't care too much for songs he sung which were meant for popular consumption and hence 'watered down' versions of his more classical qawaalis.

lol! trying to pose like the other puritan-wannabe here coz y'all think it's cool? LOL! Anyway, afreen is my all time favorite. I love listening to it. I don't care whether it is for the popular consumption or is more classical. I just enjoy it.

I like semi-classical music like thumri and its variations like dadra, kajri, etc. and also qawaalis and ghazals. I prefer semi-classical music to classical music because lyrics are important to me and they are not important to full blown indian classical music (like Khayaal and Dhrupad). So i am not a full blown connoisseur of Indian classical music.

there is another version of the qawwali that kinnera mentioned which is a straight up qawwali without all the instrumentation that is nicer. but it doesn't have the same pathos that some of his other songs have.

another favorite of mine which is probably also his most popular is mast qalandar, and i particularly like what massive attack did with it (these are the same guys who composed music for the american TV series house):

they didn't destroy the essence of the structure of the qawwali which IMO is full throated singing by a lead joined by a group. take away either and it doesn't sound as nice.
