It says that "Mudali" is thetitle given by a king in those days to anyone who me considered to excel or lead in arts or valor etc. The Tamil word "Mudal" means "first". i.e the person upon whom the title was conferred stood first among his peers.

THis title "Mudali" was given to eminent personalities from all castes. There was even a "Mudali" among Brahmins.

In the 14th century, there was a famous Brahmin Mudali in the town of Avinaasi. His name was Sivabrhamanan. He was given the title Mudali bythe king Veera Rajendran.

In due course of time, the Mudali became a caste by itself.

Many castes have origin this way. They were usually titles or honors accorded by the rulers. Over time, they became a caste.
