I read his Jaya, thoroughly enjoyed it. Just ordered his Sita. Any fans here?

"Jaya" (the old name for Mahabharata) if put in katapayadi paddhati is 18 ("ja" is 8 that goes in the units place and "ya" is 1 that goes in the tens place).
Mahabharata has 18 books (parvas).
Mahabharata war lasted 18 days.
Bhagavad-gita, part of Mahabharata, has 18 chapters.
Anything else related to 18 in Mahabharata?

Yes. 18 Akshauhini is the strength of the army that fought the Kurukshetra war. 11 on Kauravas side and 7 on Pandavas side. Even with that huge adavantage Kauravas lost the war .. all due to the One who never fought but was involved in every aspect of it :-)

Are you guys suggesting the great writer Vyasa is superstitious and followed numerology?

No idea what Jaya is about, but I've read this book by him:
http://www.amazon.com/Hanuman-An-Introduction-Devdutt-Pattanaik/dp/8187111941/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1398917626&sr=1-1-spell&keywords=Patnaik+hanuman

I enjoyed the pictures of different sculptures and paintings. With respect to the text DP ( Pattanaik) gives a lot of useful information culled from the epics and perhaps Puranas (it's been a while since I read this book) but the problem is that he is deficient when it comes to analyzing the information he is presenting. The analysis is pretty pedestrian because of which the work lacks depth.

it is fascinating, the part 18 plays in the Mahabharata. Even more fascinating to me is the meaning of "Jayam". Veda Vyasa called the Mahabharata by another name : JAYAM

 JA = 8
 YA or YAM = 1
 JAYAM represents 81.

but the math principle in Sanskrit says ‘Ankaanam vaamato gati’ that is when Numbers are expressed lyrically they must be read from right to left. So Jayam means 18.

Thanks for the explanation.

Yeah, that's how the 72 "melakarta" ragas in Carnatic music are numbered (based on the first two syllables). For example,

Maa-yaa-maalavagowla raga's number is 15 (ma = 5 and ya= 1),
Kanakaangi's number is 1 (ka = 1, and na = 0)
Mech-kalyaani's number is 65 (ma = 5, and ch = 6)

ashTAdasha purANeshu vyAsasya vachana dvayam
parOpakArah puNyAya pApAya parapeeDanam

Meaning - in the 18 puranas that Vyasa authored all he said were two things - helping others is good, and inflicting pain on others is sinful.
