ISLAMABAD: Three family members brutally killed a woman with a sickle for marrying a man from a different caste in the eastern town of Sahiwal in Pakistan, a police source told Efe on Thursday.

Farzana, 20, was killed by three of her family members who were against her inter-caste marriage to Shabir, 26.

"The victim's relatives kept chasing the couple, following which the two jumped off a moving train", Ejaz Ullah, a police officer from Sahiwal, said.

The family later convinced the woman to return to the town, where in front of the panchayat the two conflicting tribal clans accepted the marriage.

After the decision, the family of Farzana took her home where she was butchered with a sickle, police said.

The victim's uncle has been detained by the police while two other suspects are still at large.

According to the report published by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), 913 women were victims of honour killings in 2012, which declined just slightly to 869 in 2013.

"The murderers enjoy complete impunity," says the report, as, according to Islamic tradition, the perpetrators can be acquitted if the victim's family pardons the crime.

Remember pakistan was part of india and hindu culture.

There are caste like structures in all societies all over the world. For example, royalty and commner. However no society has been successful in weaving that division into its inner fabric with as much as success as hinduism.

Despite seva's efforts to dig up buried vedic quotes, caste is a reality Indians and hindus have to deal with.

It is not caste in the true sense of the word. Let me give info on what I know, Sub-continental Muslims have their own hierarchy and many kinds and levels of differences. Some of the non-religious sanctioned differences cannot be called castes but just cultural differences, very similar to Hinduism today where differences are predominantly cultural. But there is some supremacy (beyond overall Islamic Supremacism prevalent among everyone) concept among the Ashrafs, that is akin to a caste as practiced by Hindus.

At a gross religious belief level we have
Shia, Sunni, Bohra, Ahmadi and Ismailis (minor branch of Shites)

At an ideology level we have
Barelvi and Deobandi (There are anecdotal evidence to suggest that Deobandis are more of a Wahabi ideology driven extremists than barelvis), but when I read some of the writings of the Barelvi ideologues, they are equally political Islamist. The main issue here is that the deobandi extremists receive most of the funding so a major share of the pieceful acts are committed by the political Islamists aligned to those.

In terms of ideologies, now there are small communities of Muslims who do not know urdu at all in some southern states, who may not strictly follow either of the above two ideologies. Infact they used to associate with Liguistic identity rather than religious identity. But these folks have been completely Islamized by sustained campaign of mosques importing preachers from North India and non-secular countries like Bangladesh / Pakistan, and now in many of these places Urdu and the Veil are being imposed, and thus essentially cultural homogeneity is being imposed in Muslim societies.
So the situation is fluid in southern states in terms of adhering to these ideologies. Most of the youngsters now associate with these Deobandi ideologies, having been brain washed in Wahabi funded Urdu oriented Mosques, compared to their parents. Infact many older parents do not like their children going to Deobandi Mosques.

Then in terms of pecking order in marriages (because that is the only place this order is essentially practiced), First among Equals are Ashrafs - (they trace their lineage to the prophet, and dominate all religious institutions), they consider themselves a god given superior race.

Then we have Ajlafs, Pasmanandas and Arjals. We have no clear idea on how these communities called themselves so, because Islam as a religion does not recognize these three differences.
Religion by itself does not prohibit these marriages, it is just social customs that may or may not be observed by people and could be related to groups of Muslims living together isolated from the rest. But even these divisions are coming down in cities.

Then we have folks who can move up the ladder in two possible ways.

By doing very pious and sometimes "pieceful" acts. For example if folks have been to Haj and he can be called a Haji and is considered revered, irrespective of which original sections he belongs to. This is applicable to any person.

Then we have folks who can move the political Islamic Ladder, where by committing "pieceful" acts they are considered specialist and are given revered titles like Ghazi, which essentially translates to those who fought by extending the domain of Islam and during times of Mughals, was given to those who had completed their quota of killing infidels. I specifically do not know if the Ghazi title carries to next generation once obtained by a given generation. There may be other titles in Political Islamic ladder that I may not be aware off. For example the Ulema based on his wish, can carry( both religious and Political Islamic significance.
