Odissa - Nuveen to take oath fr fourth time - Secret?

WHats going on ? Odisaa has not developed greatly. Nuveen reportedly does not even speak Oriya fluently. Speaks French most fluently. Brought up abroad during his youth....

So what gives?

There is lot of parochialism in Orissa, so a regional party stands a much higher chance than a central party like congress or BJP. It does not matter if you do not speak Oriya. The fact that he is ethnically from Orissa, is all that matters.

His response in the recent cyclone was much better than what the folks
have seen in recent times under Congress rule.

But that apart, exactly what development initiatives he undertook to create a wave and win elections is a mystery.

that's not called parochialism, it's called protecting one's interests and autonomy. TN is the same way.

There is that "Orissa first" feeling among Oriyas, but that's not that rabid as in some othet places. Orissa also has a large Bengali and Telugu population. At one time there was even a Bengali-speaking Chief Minister of Orissa whose wife was Telugu-speaking. Many judges and Chief Justices of the Orissa High Court in the past have been Bengali or Telugu. There are many Telugu farmers in the Sambalpur area (after the Hirakud dam was built in the 50s) who are sort of Johnny come latelys to Orissa. Their lives in Orissa have not been made difficult by any stretch of imagination. Telugu movies have a sizable market in Orissa (in fact, it's one of the market areas for them like - Nizam, Ceded, Bangalore, Circars, etc.- where the producers sell them at wholesale), and they don't artificially restrict their screening.
