equality - what does it mean?
What does equality mean?
In politico social sense how do you interpret it?
some on this board have put forward ideas like growth in income by percentage should equal between different economic classes.
One widely accepted principle of equality is equality of opportunity. An example in education is a qualified black person cannot be denied admission into an educational institution because of his Color. Similarly in Indian context a panchama jati person cannot be denied entrance into a Hindu place of worship.
how far should this equality idea be extended through govt / legislative action?
is minimum wage a good candidate?
women's pay vs men's pay, % of blacks in educational institutes, development of different parts of a nation or state etc.
are all these worthy of equality argument?
when is a difference equal to discrimination or when does inequality turn into exploitation?
dmk claim proportional reservation is required to combat past injustice. Does that make sense?
I do not know if there are any final answers to these questions/ observations. But I would like to read your comments.

>>>TBT,
At first blush, we can say it means equal access to opportunities. In other words, all groups- race-wise, gender-wise, religion-wise- should have the same access, provided they are equally qualified. We can start with this as a starting point.

Kris
agreed on starting point.
one example for discussion.
As computer technology and Internet developed, one model that was advanced is that wall street is no longer the center of finance and it will scatter. Indeed that technology allowed finance centers to be moved away from expensive and difficult to access manhatten to other locations including southern Ct.
at the same time, the Internet related companies centralized themselves in one location, Silicon valley.
The observation here is that you can iniate opportunities but development takes its own path and in many cases catches us by surprise. The benefits of silicon valley are not even by region or by economic classes or by ethnic races. But silicon valley development is good for Usa.

For some it is a fantasy... for some others a tool to push their agenda, and the rest it is a PC buzzword.

Mayors are talking about inequality. Is this a good move?

Inequality is natural, and instead of whining better to accept it and see how to catch up with that inequality.
What is this.. noth everything comes out of production line and not everything is decided by dumb computers.
Life is not fair.
