Spot the difference: Similar techniques between the legendary Babe Ruth & modern day hero Dave Warner. As Ruth said to Don Bradman back in 1932: "Us little fellows could hit them harder than the big ones"

The first sports field in Central Park in New York was a cricket pitch in the south-western portion of the park, one of only two open spaces in the layout. The cricket grounds in the “Southern Valley” of the park were one of the first features of the park to be built and were also used for baseball, although early proponents of baseball complained that preference was given to the “English game” of cricket. The late 19th Century saw frequent cricket matches played at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, often featuring a variety of touring sides In 1865, cricket in the USA was stronger than in Australia, and the legendary WG Grace himself even toured the US with a cricket team in 1872.

A cricket match in Philadelphia in 1878 attracted 15,000 spectators as a local eleven held a touring Australian side to a draw. This was the first first class cricket game in the USA, and took place before first class cricket had been played in either South Africa or in Asia. At one stage Philadelphia, the crucible of North American cricket, had over 100 cricket clubs. In 1885, to allow for the growing demand for cricket, Central Park opened up it’s north meadow to cricket matches.
