What ails tourism in India?

Smaller countries like Thailand get much more revenue from Tourism. Big chunk of tourism in India actually are Indian origin citizens visiting India. So the actual arrivals are even lower.

In order of importance,
a) Good Mid level Hotel Chains (Like Comfort Inn/Best Western in US) that provide laundry
services. Hotel Chains tie up with the rest to bring in customers to fill rooms.
b) Connectivity and local transport (perhaps there is a need for a local transport brand that
gives reliable service, in the absence of car rentals) - including ease of doing reservations
and cross connections between Rail/Bus/Air transport services
c) Safety and making local communities/Police etc.. stake holders in tourism, emergency response (911 kind of service). Special tourism information bureau's/websites for all locations that provide maps/directions and local info etc.. How many hotels in India has pamphlets like the US hotels for local attractions ?
d) Variety in Food, and clean Water supplies along with hospitals near important attractions.
e) Showcasing of many other attractions beyond Taj Mahal which are equally worthy
Example: Belur/Halebid in Karnataka and other heritage sites, and programs that showcase
local culture and avenues for sports activities during the evenings.
f) Get more people from Far east and Buddhist countries to visit India.

Cost effectiveness in all the above.

Today many of these are handled by tour operators. But internal tourism will also explode,
if a) to e) are handled. States/Centre and Private sector should join together to create the infrastructure.

Prohibition
Absence of good restaurants at tourist sites
Unreliable, thuggish cabbies and rickshaw drivers
Poor or absent signage universally
Unimaginative product packaging
Lackadaisical maintenance of museums
Absent sense of history and archival tradition

Inflation. The days of a few dollars going a long way are long gone. Why should anyone vacation in filthy India when a cleaner, way cheaper option such as Thailand is available?

Usual culprits are:

1. Concern about cleanliness
2. General rudeness of people, especially those with some power (police, railway officials, immigration/customs folks etc.)
3. Corruption (don't expect things to be done with just a phone call)

Suggested change of focus. In their promotion material they should downgrade Taj Mahals, Caves, and Temples. They should be pushing action items - hiking in the Himalayas, Goa beaches, Nature visits to the Terai, Kaziranga, Bandipur, etc, push gambling casinoes (Arabs will come; if they come come just to see monsoon rains, they will certainly come if you add some action to go with it), participating in Indian weddings with dancing etc., and wedding feasts, push medical tourism, and many other action items. Also, they should come up creative entertainment for children (whole families will come). They should change that bi-level pricing for visiting for historic monuments (e.g., Rs. 10 for Indian citizens to be allowed in to see Taj Mahal, but $25 for Americans).

dont think anyone would come to india for gambling...macau is just around the corner and asians with their gambling background will be superior draw than anything indians can dream of doing to attract gamblers.

they should try to increase domestic tourism first by improving infrastructure and make things bearable for ppl with children & maintaining monuments. let's face it: there isnt a whole lot going for india other than temples and general mystique of an ancient civilization to attract foreigners. going after foreign money is a waste when they cant serve domestic tourists decently

There are no such thing as hadiths thankfully (I am assuming hadiths are the next best thing to Koran for mussalmans).
Why, even where hadiths are given a lot of weight like in Saudi Arabia, accommodations are made due to demands of business.
