No animal sacrifice in Kullu Dussehra this time
SHIMLA : In a first, no animal sacrifice would take place during the week-long Dussehra festival in Kullu town of Himachal Pradesh after the recent high court orders banning the ritual in the state.
Kullu district officials said that they have told the organizers and the local religious leaders not to sacrifice animals and invite contempt of court.
Kullu administration has also made tight security arrangements to foil any attempt of animal sacrifice.
Popular for its gods and goddesses, the festival of Dussehra in Kullu is also known for the custom of animal sacrifice every year.
On the concluding day, a chariot is pulled near to the bank of the Beas river, where a pile of thorn bushes is set on fire that symbolises the burning of Lanka and animals are sacrificed.
"The sacrifice of a buffalo, a rooster, a lamb, a fish and a crab used to mark the end of Dusshera festival but this time no animal sacrifice would take place as the high court has put an end to the practice at religious places of the state," said a district administration official.
The High Court in its September 1 judgment banning the sacrifice had said that "rituals attached to animal sacrifice reflect only cruelty, superstition, fear and barbarism and has nothing to do with either religion or culture."
