So why haven't these people figured out that the whole world is on to them? Why do we keep getting emails from Nigeria after all these years?

There is a P. T. Barnum quote that can explain it.

The first one says that that quote is not from PT Barnum.

"Some sources claim the quote is most likely from famous con-man Joseph ("Paper Collar Joe") Bessimer,[1] and other sources say it was actually uttered by David Hannum, spoken in reference to Barnum's part in the Cardiff Giant hoax."

I'm confused.

Sending emails is extremely cheap. The way spam has always worked, even if one in hundreds of thousands of people who receive spam fall for it, the return on investment for the spammer is very high. So, among the hundreds of thousands of people who receive such emails, there will always be at least one or two who might fall for it.

Not true. Every other day a Jignesh (pronounced Jigness) Shah or a Adesh Shah goes crying to the Mumbai police that the Minister's daughter who'd been looking for help to transfer millions out of Nigeria has stopped communicating after collecting a couple of lacs as bank fees.

We Indians believe in supporting entrepreneurs from other third world countries who come up with innovative business models leveraging Information Technology and social media.

such scamsters will thrive for as long as ... well forever. every now and then i hear about ponzi schemes ("will double your money every year") stealing crores of rupees from them. i hear about sadhus and babas who steal gold from such gullible people after promising them that they can easily double it. and it is not only uneducated folks who get cheated this way. read about Speak Asia and you'll know. heck, i also lost 200 rupees to a teen patti scamster in goa a few years ago when i was under the influence of the deadly combination of Honey Bee and KF Strong. i was about to lose 2000 more when my brother kicked me out of that place.
