that's the past participle of screwed, somewhat like penii is the plural of penius, and similar to radii and radius.

first it was dee and her job-market paper - she said she had a proof for the pesky conjecture, and that the sound i might have heard over the text message was that of the sword crashing down on the heavy wooden table; then david sedaris's new book which, according to one reviewer, mentions diabetes in the title, but nowhere else within; then it was ratnaparkhi whose candid opinions about her husband and the ugc were both humorous and endearing. i've been laughing for a long time tonight. or as a behenji here put it, "i was laughing and laughing and laughing." tomorrow, there's p who'll call me from dc. ratnaparkhi's name reminded me of purkhayastha who was one of my classmates at the institute, but the latter may have been from assam.

i could never understand what purkhayastha (assamese?) was saying, ever. and he was not the only one; there was also tapan ("topon") (bengali), phuke ("phukay") (maharashtrian), tikle ("tiklay") (maharashtrian), medhuri (telugu), gangwar (mp?), and kishen gopal (kashmiri). i had to learn many types of english to decode what they were saying.

speaking of giggles, all i had to do to send medhuri into paroxysms of them was to call him a lanja koDaka, which he himself had taught me. i don't remember its meaning anymore, but i'm sure it had something to do with sex, probably with close relatives. he would intersperse the giggulus with "ayyoo, kaDavuLae," for he knew some thamizh also. his clever strategy, i suppose, was to teach me the term, then get me to say it, so that he could enjoy the act, and if the goddess smote anyone down with her thrishul or the magical chakra which she held in her third hand, it would be me!
