In the bay area such incidents happen in the heavily desi-chinese areas. Typically Both hubby and wifey go to work, kids go to school, and old, feeble parents stay at home. So the thieves come in, tell the parents to stay quiet and stand up facing the wall and go about their business of taking away valuables, electronic items, etc.

Even in this area, home invasions are on the rise in indian american homes after Deepavali. Theives know that jewels are released from the bank lockers for Diwali.

A few year ago, on a Saturday evening, when a restaurant called Bombay Bistro in an upscale neighborhood (Rockville - Potomac area in Washington Suburbs) was packed with diners, two masked men with guns came and ordered the diners to put their jewelry on their tables .... or else, and then the robbers calmly took what they quickly could.

Once our local temple in Lanham, MD was robbed too. Again masked men with duct tapes. They just taped the manager's and all the priests' mouths, opened the cash drawer and took whatever cash was available. A poor Namboodri priest whose beard and moustache were taped with duct tape had to go through agony when they got the tape off along with some hair.

one of friends' cousin was in Edison last year, walking in broad daylight when a kallu came to her (oh, Rishi), and told her to give whatever she had. She handed him the cash. He asked for the jewelry too. As she began fumbling and taking her watch, chain, and, earrings out, a whitie walked by from there, the other side of the street, and asked what was going on, thus making the kallu throw everything and run away.

That sounds like a scene out of Quentin Tarantino's pulp fiction. A couple eat at a diner and then pull out guns to rob the place. I thought that was a very smart idea. They filled their bellies and surveyed the place nicely at the same time. And the cherry on top is that their meal was free.

I have heard that they got really smart. They carry metal detectors when they burglarize Indian homes to get those mukku-pudakalu, jookaalu, puligollu, ungaraalu out of aavaala dabbaalu, biyyapu bastaalu, aavakaaya jaadeelu, etc.

I have heard about this too. My cousin used to live in Sunnyvale in early-mid 2000's and there were a bunch of desi occupied apartments robbed over a matter of a few weeks and the robbers reportedly used metal detectors. And I also heard about a case where a thief camped outside a bank, followed a lady home and robbed the jewelry she had taken home from the bank locker. So ladies, if you are taking jewelry from the bank locker to attend a party, don't just go home right away. Go to a bunch of places, make sure you are not being followed and then go home.

is this a robbery style widely seen in areas of large populations of Indian americans?
Are the places in above examples located in urban centers?

Are these robbers Indian americans? (as they seem to know some intimate details not normally known to an average robber).

Expensive metal detectors in the vicinity of 10 grand that can detect from the street. These guys mainly target Indians & Somalians, as it appears they are known to keep expensive jewelry at home. This was rampant in DC area a few years ago and police arrested Hispanic gang from New York but they were gotten away with mild sentence, as far as I know none of the stolen items were retrieved from them.

happening in the greater boston area too. what's worse is when the local newspapers published the reasons why indian americans were being targeted, namely, gold at home. that really paints a target. i thought it was idiotic that they'd run that article.

Santa Clara and Sunnyvale authorities are warning residents to be wary after a number of brazen street robberies by criminals who appear to be targeting people of Indian descent. In the most recent crimes, the robbers either grabbed jewelry straight from the victims and ran or pulled out a handgun and demanded the victims’ valuables, police said.

I heard about this incident yesterday.
An Indian lady stepped out of her apartment to go out and throw the trash. There was a robber waiting right outside the door with a gun. He demanded that she hand over cash/valuables. She gave him her mangal sutra but that was not enough for him. He told her to go inside and get some cash. He heard a baby crying and looked to make a move to go inside the apartment. The lady yelled like she was calling her husband even though he was not there. The robber panicked and left.

People in heavily desi populated areas such as Fremont, Sunnyvale, San Jose, Santa Clara, etc have become sitting ducks for thieves. They know very well that Desis are loaded with money and easier to rob than say a white grandpa who might pull a gun and shoot their head off. I am not saying that Desis ought to keep guns at home as this can cause different types of headaches.

In Banjara Hills branch of SBI, they have a locker facility for those who deposit 1 crore or above. You can go there, wear your jewelry in privacy (even change into that special saree) and go to a function. On your way back, you can go to the bank and put everything back in the locker.

All those charged are from Houston, Texas, the prosecutor's office said. The five were arrested last week in robberies in that state, Carey said. Authorities here are working on extraditing them to New Jersey.
They also committed crimes — targeting Asians — in Texas, Michigan, New York and Georgia, according to the prosecutor.
