4th test - India makes four changes
Wow! that's quite shocking.
Australia won the toss and elected to bat and is 66/0 in 11 overs
"Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ishant Sharma were all left out, with Rohit Sharma back in the team and Suresh Raina and Bhuvneshwar Kumar in for the first time in the series. As expected, MS Dhoni's retirement meant that Wriddhiman Saha returned to the side after playing in Adelaide"

Yadav & Shami are leaking runs at the rate of 6 per over. Aside, Did Kohli see Pujara as a direct threat to him? I'm surprised with his dumping, he is one of those bats that should be persisted with over Sharmas and Rainas of the world.

From cricinfo:
7.5 Mohammed Shami to Rogers, no run, and when the chance comes, it is dropped, Rahul it is at second slip, Shami induces the edge with an awkward lifter, can't come easier in the slips, Rahul seems to have it covered as he bends to his right, but it pops out of his hands, India keep playing roulette with their cordon, but the drops keep coming
Ravi: "gotta wonder - why place a youngster with 1 match experience in slip cordon?" Well, if Rahul had held on, there would have been people praising Kohli's 'boldness'
Ashish: "Just because his name is Rahul, doesn't mean he has to stand in the slips."
Bobby Talyarkha: "Only one word for this team selection - baffling!"

I just looked up Pujara's stats, he hasn't scored a ton in last 10 matches, averaging only 24, so it makes sense to drop him but the gripe is his replacement Rohit hasn't fared much better.

i am very disappointed with kohli's decision to drop pujara. i really think pujara is india's next RD. i am sure he'll fight his way back into the team. he very much has the look of a quiet, steely achiever.

Pujara has only himself to blame for his exclusion. He is a shadow his former big scoring self. That being said, I would have given him a chance as an opener to see if he can rediscover his form. It is sad to see the "new wall" crumble so soon.

oh come on man, it is one series. guys like pujara with an obviously solid technique need to be a given a longer run than the nohit sharmas of the world.

Re: 4th test - India makes four changes
It is not just one series. He didn't do that great in England either. 'rat is a big fan of Nohit and it is no surprise he has brought him back. Shastri had said recently that he would love to bring Raina back into the test team and that is what he has done. The Sharmas and Rainas get more chances due to their glamor factor + limited overs super hero image. Regular guys like Pujara need to work extra hard to make sure their spot is safe. If they concede an inch, they will be kicked down by a foot. That is the way of the world. If you remember, a few years ago Badrinath had made his debut against SA and while everyone else failed, he made respectable scores. Yet, just one low scoring test later he was dropped never to be picked again. Again, it was the lack of glamor factor that did him in.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:nevada wrote:Pujara has only himself to blame for his exclusion. He is a shadow his former big scoring self. Warner scores another ton (3rd in this series?). Aussies are playing it like an ODI, scored 189 runs in 42 overs.

Who is Rat, Virat? I doubt if he survives more than a couple of series as a captain; he lacks cool, composure to be a good captain.nevada wrote:It is not just one series. Oh! well, we ensured that our tradition is kept intact; made a superstar out of a newbie. Smith scores his fourth ton of this series.

I hope they bat for 2.5 days, score 700+ and then bowl out India twice with a day to spare.

To complete the humiliation, Nathan Lyon gets 15 wickets and is mom.

The SCG pitch crumbles on the 5th day usually. So Lyon will most likely get a boat load of wickets.

Re: 4th test - India makes four changes
It is so depressing to watch; top 5 aussie bats, all scored 50+ ( 2 centuries, 2 near centuries). #6 is batting on 31.

Australia picking up some pace this session, collecting 118 off 29 overs. All the top six have gone past 50 now, the fourth time it has happened against India. If Bhuvneshwar concedes one more, all of India's four frontline bowlers will have gone for 100 or more
Yeay, centuries for everyone!

Re: 4th test - India makes four changes
Why did they declare? Should have scored as many runs as they can. Shammi took 5 wickets, got to be one of the unimpressive 5-fors. India will have to bat for 25 overs today. Lets see how do we fare today. Will Rahul reach double figures?
Meanwhile NZ kicked SLs butt, won the series 2-0.
** Oh! well Vijay gone, 3rd ball.

Saving the match means full two days of batting in 1 at innings. That is a tall order for this team.

and a first for Australia i.e. top 6 scoring 50+. The only other Australian batsman who scored 4 tons in as many matches was none other than Bradman.nevada wrote:Australia picking up some pace this session, collecting 118 off 29 overs. Is kohli'a three centuries in a series much superior to Warner and Steve smith 500 plus runs against toothless Indian bowling?

Re: 4th test - India makes four changes
I don't think Australian bowling is that much better either. Johnson didn't do much other than that one spell (in the 2nd test?), and pitches have been flat (by Australian standards). All things being equal, I agree with you that Kohli's centuries are better as they came on away tracks.truthbetold wrote:Is kohli'a three centuries in a series much superior to Warner and Steve smith 500 plus runs against toothless Indian bowling?

Re: 4th test - India makes four changes
Sidney has historically been a very good batting track. Even Ravi Shastri has a double century there, hammering a rookie Shane Warne all over the park. This is the best opportunity for the Indian team to bat big without any trouble.

excellent althoug this series has been disappointing, the batting hasn't been bad. good to see youngsters making hundreds in away tests.

Now 'rat gets his century but Aussies are still nearly 300 ahead. Lyon looks very threatening.

watson pushed india back into defeat zone. A follow on for India or a huge lead for Australia. Bad set up on a turning track. Gives a chance to rohit sharma and raina before the end of series.

Not meant to be disparaging but your comment reminded me of this report in the movie alluri sitarama raju .
A junior officer reporting higher rank officer in milatary (tyagaraju and ??) after british troops were routed by Alluri tribal band.

Test is heading towards a draw; I think we can bat out 58 overs without much difficulty. Overall, this team has to feel good about their performance in this series.

Re: 4th test - India makes four changes
They saved 4th test with difficulty thanks to tailender help in both innings.
Batting only kohli, rahane and Vijay contributed.
Rahul's selection seems to be justified.
Dhawan, and Pujara need to resolve serious technique issues.
Rohit needs to resolve his temperment issue. He needs to play ranji matches and learn to bat for long hours.
Saha needs to improve.
Ashwin and Ishant did OK. Bhuvi - not bad.
Shami, yadav fared poorly. Varun - long way to go.
India is still a very long way from a test class bowling group. That will continue to cause them problems.

and then there is RAINA - the white elephant in the room.
As Gavaskar said - India's bowling needs a thorough new look. Enough batting potential in India that they can even drop Pujara. (I strongly think Kohli simply played a Ganguly vs Dravid game here).

Pujara just had a bad series. Don't think it's a technique problem. Dhawan yes. He appears to be a more typical delhi swashbuckler.

of course....he is after all another Bombaykar - in the mould of Vengsarkar. Unfortunately, Indian cricket is full of clans - be it from Bombay, Madras, Hyderabad or calcutta.

Raina is a sitting duck, literally. 5 ducks in his last 7 test innings.
