dinner
had dinner with a school friend who lives in houston. dinner was in itc, dum phukt. we were welcomed by a cherubic, fair girl who looked like a foreigner. i called her back again and enquired where she hailed from and she said - metiabruz. i tipped her rs 1000 and did not call her back or inquire further. btw she had recognized me by name because i order take-out frequently from dum phukt.

Re: dinner
lol. had to google metiabruz and lol again.
Love this part about visiting desh and reconnecting with old friends. Early on, I used to just meet my close friends and/or their families. But not with school friends who weren't that close. Coz... small kids and always went for some big events. Moreover xh was pretty demaning/dominating, but can't blame him as I myself didn't care about having a circle of my own, just assimilated myself in his circle. Also no social network, so had lost touch with many. Then later i didn't want to meet anyone except close friends, coz of divorce/separation situation.
But this changed since last year when I ran into a friend and she did a small get-together, and I realized that I like this. So now I announce my arrival/exit beforehand and meet them if they call me. So far I haven't taken the initiative to host anything there. I don't bother to correct them when they refer to XH as my husband. XH still tries to dominate my schedule with them i.e. tells me not to go, or doesn't join me if invited, but I don't let him interfere, and go even if he doesn't come. Likewise he doesn't mind if I refuse to join his activities with his friends (or sometimes family) - earlier that would warrant a 1-week sulk.
Overall, tis fun.

ha! what a little person you are. do you at least call back and inquire further as seems to be the male tradition in your part of the world?

Sure, I've much to learn from someone who begrudges a tip to the Messican who braved the rains to home-deliver her dinner.

Smart girl. They might fling back the one dollar you grudgingly handed over, or worse still, take pity and give you a fiver for your next meal.

oh, but I'm a working class woman with no inheritance breaking my back to save money for a dowry. don't worry, eventually some guy is gonna get a big tip. what are you saving up for, an apt at the bandra ohm? you won't even have to leave your apt to take a swim.

actually itc, kolkata is horrendously expensive. we did a dinner (my bil, me and my older) 3 years ago in pan asian and the bill was 50k! last night we had only snacks -- habiba lamb chops, kakori kebabs, chicken kebab (esp. cooked for us -- out of menu) and a fish kebab.

Re: dinner
i'm feeling guilty now. in my defense, i hardly eat at upscale joints -- maybe twice a year. last year was on 2 occasions. i hardly travel and i live frugal. i travel locally in a maruti 800. our only lavish expenditure is wife flying frequently to patna and ordering in. so, ya, it's OK.

Re: dinner
i just called them back fearing they had overcharged me and i forgot to scrutinize the bill (happened with me in hyatt once but i caught them before paying). the liquor did us in. each double black large peg costs rs 1,600 with taxes! so that is rs 11,200 for the liquor we consumed (a 1 litre bottle of double black costs approx rs 3000 and a large peg is 60 ml!). so rs 14,800 went towards snacks. each kebab platter costs rs 1,500 approx. so that's 10 platters. we had 5 platters plus 2 packed for younger. i guess some platters cost a tad more last night. verdict -- avoid itc; hyatt is cheaper. always order in from itc and party with amrut single malt at home (amrut costs 2,500 approx and is/was among top ten single malts globally -- it's indian, bangalore, though they use scottish malts to a degree).Beatrix Kiddo wrote:That's pretty steep. $200 per person, and no main course too!
so we consumed approx. 500 ml of double black and paid rs 11,200. had we bought a bottle and partied at home, we would have spent rs 1,500 and paisa nil!

i want to kick myself in the butt. but god has made us such that we cannot. i am never drinking in itc now or even hyatt. never. i'll go to bed thinking i suffered a 30k business loss.

hmm makes sense now that you see the breakdown. $25 per appetizer still sounds more expensive than decent desi places in NYC!
Thinking of which, we ate out quite a number of times in desh, but I don't know the charges of any place. Always someone else took care of the bill (advantage of being the youngest adult). XH paid a couple of times but I never bothered to ask him how much it was (there was no alcohol in those ones anyway).
The only expense that I know coz XH and I shared it was for a small get-together we did in a still-developing hotel. Got a package. Small banquet hall (that can double as conference room), unlimited rounds of appetizers and soft-cocktail. Buffet of regular stuff. Some decorations for which they charged extra. About 40 people. Costed Rs. 16,000.
There were a couple of places where we splurged on cocktails and food. Let me see if I can get lucky and find their online menu.

in the big scheme of things that's not bad at all. someone I know spent 2 lakhs to bang a second rung actress recently...now that's what you call a waste of money. I suspect she wasn't that much different than his ball and chain and doubt she even gave a bill for him to peruse at a later date and regret
