dosai vs idli
the regular dosa's so boring, even with it's fillings or lack thereof. the most interesting dosas are pesarattu and minapattu imo. or is minapattu the same as dosa?
now idli, that's awesome every which way with sambar, chutney whatever. too bad my wife cant make it to save her life

I do not mind this discussion as long as everyone who is biased to one side or other posts recipe of their favorite.

I love Rava dosa. I also like masala dosa with the ulli karam rubbed on the dosa. It used to be standard practice in hotels in India but not anymore. These days they just stuff the dosa with some potato curry and call it masala dosa.
I like Idli too, but between dosa and idli my choice would be the former. I like Rava idli more than regular idli.

Minapattu and pesarattu have more minapa pappu and pesara pappu than rice floor. They can also be made without rice floor. Dibba rotte is basically a thick minapa attu.
So, they are healthier for diabetics and vegetarians in general (higher protein) as long as not too much oil is used to cook them.
Upma-pesarattu.... hmm.....

I prefer Pesarattu to dosa anyday! It's the low carb, high protein healthier and tastier option.
I just looked up Minapattu. It's not the same as the regular dosa. It has 1 cup urad dal +1/2 cup sooji and 1/2 cup rice flour Vs 1:3 urad and rice (not flour) for dosas. Minapattu doesn't need fermentation like the regular dosa. I'm going to try that today.

i tried a pesrattu once. it tasted like congealed mud slurry. maybe the person who made it for me didn't know what she was doing. but i am with the OP on idli > dosai.

All these attus, rottes and dosais are everywhere in SI, variations of the same idea. Apparently, Deccan (in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Telangana) has several healthy options (with different lentils, raagi, etc.), that are healthier than the regular dosai.Marathadi-Saamiyaar wrote:

What is saru vadu?
sAru => rasam in Kannada
vAdu => vada(i) in Telugu
sAru vAdu => Rasam & Vada Combo

Saru Vadu is from a telugu historical movie of 70s. It is an incorrect joining of words by a non native speaker.Hellsangel wrote:truthbetold wrote:UPPILI SARU VADU

Uppili Saru = Uppili Sir or Uppiliji
Vadu = Not so respectful
Used here as an alternative to 'Not so holy.' It is a humorous poke rather than a serious commentary.

seems so!
pesarattu is quite yummy if made right - i love both the whole green gram dal one as well as the one made with the yellow, split mung dal - crispy pesarattu and ginger chutney is a nice combo.
of course, i remain loyal to aDai and think it is superior to pesarattu.

Looked at pictures of aDai dosa. There are so many variations to it. Many different lentils are used (and eaten with avial?). Looks like a healthy option.Marathadi-Saamiyaar wrote:Vakavaka Pakapaka wrote:

Pesarattu > Dose. Tastes yummy, especially with a caramelized onion topping and healthier than regular dose.
An interesting twist is the MLA Pesarattu. Its a regular pesarattu with an upma filling. Makes for a hearty, delicious and healthy breakfast.

yesterday I went to saravana bhavan in irving to sate cravings and had idli & pesarattu. my friend had a dosa that came with the ulli kaaram you are talking about (with ground lentils in it, unless you're talking about something else entirely). it was pretty decent but thought the ones I had in somwarpet this dec were vastly superior.

The ulli karam I know is made by grinding onion, dried red chilli, garlic and salt. It doesn't have lentils. Where is Somwarpet? I know there is one in Pune.

Most people here haven't heard of Kanchivaram idli. Quite unique and tasty. It's square-shaped unlike the usual round idli.

Not sure if it is sold in restaurants. Must be one of those home-made special products.

a guess: in TN the "masala dosA" is often listed on the menu as masal dosai (doing northindians the favor of cutting off redundant vowels at the end of words as is their wont). they probably misread it and hence the east african prefix to the dosai.

i also no likes the triangluar shape of pessarattu. they can't fold it like a dosa 'cos of it's weight i guess. it reminds me of and tastes like cheela. i no likes cheela: http://nishamadhulika.com/en/590-besan-ka-cheela-recipe.html

Hmm, I thought masai implied an afro-tamil fusion. Also, don't some African cuisines have a dosa like thing called injera? Maybe injera is a corrupted form of Kanjivaram.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:Hellsangel wrote:Masai Dosai?

a guess: in TN the "masala dosA" is often listed on the menu as masal dosai (doing northindians the favor of cutting off redundant vowels at the end of words as is their wont). they probably misread it and hence the east african prefix to the dosai.
